Ferris @ Grand Valley State: GLIAC Conference Finals
Both teams are ranked in the top 20 Nationally. They are only 50 miles apart and have developed a truly wonderful competitive relationship (read, HATE EACH OTHER). Ferris State won the match in four. But all tough games.
It was nice to shoot in a different facility. At FSU it is cramped and there aren't many spots to shoot from. GVSU is more of an arena and had some areas to shoot down, albeit only from the sides. I made a couple goals for this game. Get some setter shots. I find the setter is the most boring player to shoot. 99% of all shots look alike. Second, get some perspective shots. Wider shots that show players together on the court. I shot only the 1DX at shutter speeds of 500 to 1600. Let me know what you think.

Some very nice stuff. You had mentioned Shutter Speed of 5000 to 8000? Wow, that is one great lit arena!!

Ben - Awesome set. You seem to have volleyball coverage down to a science. Keep up the great shooting!

Thanks Russ: I worked really hard to get some shots straight on but the lighting was horrible in that direction. Maybe due to the black netting behind the end-lines. ISO 8000, 1/500th and f2.8 was about as good as it got. Haven't shot much beyond ISO 8000 but maybe I should give it a try.

Gordorad: Sorry I screwed up there. Should have been 1/500th to 1/1600th. I am definitely losing it!

wowza - was looking for a shot that included the ceiling to see where all that light was coming from These have ex timing. Seems 1/1000 is almost not enough to stop hand motion at this level - good to know should I ever get that choice.

Great timing on the action. Very nice. Thanks for sharing. What case# were you using on the 1DX to shoot these?

#'s 4, 11 & 13 for me. Also, love the jube shots.

Jerry: I was using case type 4. I have played with both 2 & 4 and didn't notice much difference. Thanks all for the comments.

Great set Ben, thanks for sharing. #4 and #13 for me. I've always found Volleyball very difficult to photograph, you made it look easy with these!

Ben, beautiful images. It's always such a challenge capturing such a fast moving sport in typically poor lit gyms. You truly have it down to a science.

These kind of exposures and colors are what make this amateur shake my head in disappointment every time I look at my pics. Love them!

Ben,
This is what a volleyball set should look like. Fabulous work, my friend.
I agree with Russ, #13 is far and away my favorite!
These have great color, clarity and vibrance, especially for ISO 8000.

Thanks for sharing!
