p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · samsung 28" 4k monitor

I know there's a separate thread on 4k monitors for editing but I'm not asking if a 4k monitor is good for editing. I already know it is. I'm wondering if anyone has used this monitor for photo editing and could comment on its color accuracy, ability to calibrate accurately, etc.

Or can someone recommend a 28-30" 4k monitor under $1k that is great for photoshop/editing (mostly high end portrait retouching use)

This monitor has a TN panel, so it won't be great off-axis for color. Color accuracy on-axis should generally be fine, though - especially when calibrated.

General rule of thumb is to stay away from TN panels for serious photo editing, but I guess it depends on what your standards are.

I shopped 4K monitors hard before I made my purchase decision. There is only one sub $1000 IPS 4K panel that I'm aware of, and that's the 24" Dell unit. I did not find any 28-30" 4K IPS monitors. The next IPS panel up from the 24" were 31-32" units which run $1400-$2000.

thanks for the tip. It might be worth trying it from amazon where I can return it if it doesn't measure up. I wish Dell would drop the price on the 2713hm to $450(ish), i would probably just buy that until the 4k IPS monitors drop in price.

I would wait till they come up with a 28-32" 4K monitor that is at least 95% Adobe RGB and not just srgb. At 4K, I think a 24" is too small in size (especially the fonts) to be a great improvement from a 2500x1600 monitor.

I do all my editing with 8 bit sRGB so i don't need to wait for an adobe rgb version.

shouldn't you at least use 16bits during the editing stage even if you plan to only ever use 8bit sRGB as the output? I'd think you'll get lots of loss of color and maybe banding and such if you do any heavy edits in 8bit mode.

Anyway, I've heard bad reports about the Samsung for photo work. It may be at least six months if not 12 before the 28" UHD/4k ones that are good hit your target price point. For now the Dell UP2414Q is pretty awesome (yeah only 24", but it feels larger for editing due to the UHD).

its on amazon at $560, so not exactly breaking the budget . i bet if you shopped around you'd find it for less.

$560 is the lowest price I've seen it at. I'm still probably going to wait until it's below $500 or for when the 3014 drops to below $900
