I tend to use my tripods as much as possible when taking close-ups and macro photographs.
However, on very few occasions I was able to take close-up pictures thanks to VR and AF-S.
The attached picture is an example.
I took it when I was visiting an archaeological site in Austria.
I didn't have my tripod with me (I left it in the car ). I saw that six-spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae) resting on a plant. The overcast sky provided a nice diffuse lighting, so I tried to take few pictures. I settled at the ground level, and used D300+105VR (f/8, 1/200 s) combo hand hold, ISO 400, AF-C with one of the 51 AF sensors pointed at the eye of the insect. Both AF-S and VR helped me, on that occasion, to take a sharp close-up image.
Considering the size of the six-spot Burnet, and that I used a DX body, magnification was around 1:2.
The distant background allowed to avoid distracting elements.
