Does anybody have any macro shots and otherwise? I have the 35mm DX and I am thinking of replacing it with this lens. Mostly for bugs and flowers but occasionally as a low light lens. The 35mm is really sharp, I just don't use it a lot.
I would for sure get more use out of a dedicated macro. But I think 40mm might be way too short to get close to some bugs.

Love the 40 f2.8G Ditched the DX 35 f1.8 because of distortion/CA
and have never looked back. I use it for da bugs but mainly for low light
inna brewpubs on my D7K.

Thanks, also works great on the D810/800's in 1.2x mode.

This is my walk-around lens on DX. Vignetting is a little too much on FX for my tastes - even at 1.2x. In DX mode it is, of course, just fine.

Why not keep the 35 1.8 dx, and add a close filter or extension tubes?

Or just get something like the 105 VR?

I've never own the 40mm macro, but owned both the 105 VR and 35 dx with a close up filter and extension tubes. If budget isnt an issue, iml, the 105 VR is the best choice if you want to shoot bugs. If you're not keen on sticking with nikon lenses, take a look at the sigma 150mm OS macro.

The 35DX, much as I love it, is not nearly as good close up as the 40 is.

The 105VR is wildly overpriced for its performance. It's barely better than the 85VR at a significant cost increase (here in Canada it's significantly more than the better performing Sigma 105 OS, but for some reason that's the one Sigma lens that's cheaper in Canada)

I am just not using the 35mm DX a lot. I shoot outside most of the time and I have the 18-70mm. The 35mm is really sharp, but at the same focal point and at 5.6, seriously ,it's hard to tell the difference. I bought the 18-70mm used because it was cheap, it's actually really nice. The more I use it the more I like it.
My original question, I was figuring on having a dedicated macro lens, without a large investment if I put the 35mm on the block.

The 18-70 is a remarkably good lens, and wildly undervalued for what it delivers.

If you don't need the speed, then yes, swapping the 35 for a 40 makes sense. I'd recommend going for something longer if you can swing it though, a used Tamron 90/2.8 non-VC shouldn't be much more and gets you a lot more working distance (at 1:1 the 40's going to be nearly brushing the subject)

Personally my 35/1.8 practically lives on whichever body I'm currently shooting, even my D700 (and in FX mode in that case).
