What would be really nice to see is a non DO 400mm F/4.

That would be nice, but it would probably be pretty much the same as an EF 300/2.8L IS with a 1.4x Extender. The 'base' 400/4 lens would let you get to 800/8 with a 2x Extender, which you can't do with the 300/2.8, at least not with Mk III Extenders which you can't 'stack' (300/2.8 + 1.4x + 2x = 840/8), but you wouldn't have f/2.8 at 300mm, which can be useful.

So many lenses, so little money...

I don't think Canon will ever come up with a 500 5.6,especially in the 4-5000 $ price range.

They are aware that no sane person would be 3-4000$ over the 1000$ 400mm 5.6L...

Unless I am mistaking..

A 600 5.6 instead......

Well, people pay a "3-4000$" premium for an extra 100mm all day long: 500/4 vs 400/4, 400/4 vs. 300/4, 300/2.8 vs 200/2.8, 200/2 vs 100/2 etc. If they are sane, you tell me…

I agree a 600/5.6 would be an attractive wildlife lens from a reach vs. weight/size perspective, but it would cost even more: You'd need to pay that 100mm premium twice, and what sane person would pay $6-8000 over the 400/5.6.

A 500mm f/6.7 IS that is light, sharp in all zones from "go" and cheap could convince me. I could shoot cityscapes all day and night with such thing.

I used to have a Mamiya Sekor 500C. It was really sharp but the lateral chromatic aberration was pretty noticeable until f/11. It was all metal so was heavy, but not unwieldy.

600 f/5.6 IS at $4000 would probably be my cap, and as someone else noted in another thread, I don't think Canon would put that out at that price.

if a 500 f/5.6 came in at 4k, I'd spend a tiny bit more and buy a used copy of the very excellent 500mkI again at just over 5k & be happy with 500 f/4. when I had that lens, even on a 1D Mark IV, I mostly shot it at 700 f/5.6 or stopped down a bit.. 700 f/6.3 was probably my most used focal length / aperture combo.

On another forum someone mentioned wanting a 500mm at f/5.6 from Canon.

I would very much favor one over a 400mm at f/5.6 as it is a more focal length where I live.

Now if a 500mm f/5.6 came out for between $4,000-5,000 would you buy one?

This theoretical lens would have a weight 1.59-1.94kg and a dimension of around 10.16cm by 34.03cm.

Lower the price to $2500 and you will get MUCH more will buy responses.
