On another forum someone mentioned wanting a 500mm at f/5.6 from Canon.

I would very much favor one over a 400mm at f/5.6 as it is a more focal length where I live.

Now if a 500mm f/5.6 came out for between $4,000-5,000 would you buy one?

This theoretical lens would have a weight 1.59-1.94kg and a dimension of around 10.16cm by 34.03cm.

I don't think Canon will ever come up with a 500 5.6,especially in the 4-5000 $ price range.

They are aware that no sane person would be 3-4000$ over the 1000$ 400mm 5.6L...

Unless I am mistaking..

A 600 5.6 instead......

A 500 f/5.6 would be lighter but of course longer than a 300 f/2.8. It would probably indeed be around $4-5K. I'd also agree weight would be in the 1.6-1.9kg range.

Personally I'd rather a 125-500 f/5.6L IS though.

I want a 500/4.5 with IS for around $3500-$4000. Just a dream. Carry on.

Pixel a 125-500mm would be very similar to the 150-600 of Sigma & Tamron.

Chuck Sigma sells a 500/4.5 without IS for $5000.

Cheers.

Too much of a price premium over the 400 f/5.6. Make it a 4.5 like Chuck said and we might have something.

No. I'm mostly done with the fixed teles. In that range I'd get the new 400/4 DO II which should be just fine with a 1.4x.

Haha, but they'll pay almost $6000 more for an extra stop.

I personally wish Canon would release a 100-300 2.8 with a built in TC. I know Sigma makes one without the TC but every thread about them always ends up with people saying the AF is quirky.

No.

I use a 400/5.6 and a 300/2.8 "mkI" bare and with 1.4 (both) and 2.0 (300 only) TCs with a 5dIII

The 400/4.5 is useful in good ligth for fast work (small falcons catching dragon-flies f.ex.) and under windy conditions, where the 300 gets blown around.

This combination I grow fonder of each year, flexible, lightweight (no need for tripod or monopod) ,fit into one large backpack (Computrekker 300AV).The upgrade for me would be the 300/2.8 mk II

With the advent of 100-400 II and 400 DO MkII, Canon has by far the most varied and the most excellent long lens assortment in the world.

What is needed there are a few more economically priced long lens options such as updated 300 f/4 IS and 400 f/5.6.

With such more than ample lens selection, I think it is unreasonable to expect Canon to further fine-divide the existing lineup by developing new lenses such as 500 f/5.6, 600 f/5.6, 700 f/6.3, 800 f/8, 150-500 f/5.6 etc. in order to satisfy custom wishes by Joe Blow in Iowa, or Jane Doe from Perth.

No.

I own the 500 IS II because I need to shoot 700mm most of the time. I find the 500/4 to be eminently light and handholdable, though it is more money.

If I shot [email protected] all the time I'd probably just get the new 400 DO and tack on the TC.

Regardless, I doubt we'll ever see a 500/5.6 because it's a bit of an odd requirement (likely very limited market) and there's other effective ways of getting there.

A zoom natively > 400 mm would be welcome. For example, a 200-500/4 DO would be very nice though somewhat expensive.

I would be interested in a 500mm 5.6 or a 600mm 5.6. Rather than have Canon release one of these at $4K or $5K, I would like to see one of these coming from Tamron or Sigma. If they can manufacture a 150-600mm zoom for between $1K and $2K, they should be able to manufacture a prime for a similar price. It would most likely be lighter than the zoom as well. I currently have a 600mm 5.6, but it's a manual lens with no IS. An new model with AF & IS would interest me. I understand zooms are more versatile, but certain photographers like myself who don't need or want the focal range would appreciate such a prime.

I agree. Who knows, might even be able to get a decent 800mm f/8 lens in a pinch with the new 400 DO II.

I'm sure a 1.7x TC would bridge the IQ gap between 1.4x and 2x, especially for the newer big teles. (Please excuse my going OT.)

I'm happy using my 300/2.8 with TCs, and voted accordingly.

I could be interested in a 200-700/4.5/6.3 with fast AF (all points usable, not just center) and good IS.

Total pipe dream: 1.4X - 2X zoom telextender.

What would be really nice to see is a non DO 400mm F/4.

Me too. Although I will update my 100-400L IS to the new Mk II version, asap (the order is in).
