What is the difference in a Canon 'Steel mount For Digital Slr' and the undescribed ( plastic) alternative mount??

Specifically the difference in these 2 options (not promoting the site in anyway) to justify/explain the price difference

http://www.digitaloutlets.net/canon/can24105/
&
http://www.digitaloutlets.net/canon/can24105steel/

Is there significant advantage in the more expensive 'steel' version... longevity, build, image quality, etc??

Many thanks...

Mick

There's something at least wrong with that $499 price. Maybe it's totally bogus. There's only one version of the EF 24-105/4L IS lens, and it has a steel mount.

They seem to have a pretty good rating at ResellerRatings, and so maybe it's just a mistake.

If you're up for an adventure, I'd say go with the $499 option. It's the same lens as the $899 option. It goes for $1500 at B&H. Maybe you should call them and hear what they have to say about it.

I smell a rat.

STEER VERY CLEAR of websites like that .

the 24-105L ONLY comes with one mount . there are no canon lenses that have different mounts (or any other build) for the same lens.

that website has all the hallmarks of the classic 'bait and switch' house or just plain scam .

look out for kits of gear sold together that don't match or won't work or are stuff thats out of date like http://www.digitaloutlets.net/canon/can5dmkii-24pkg/

5D2 with a EFs 17-85 .

5D2 has been out of production for a while and won't mount the EFs lens . !!!

again stay away .
buy from B&H or Adorama . they will be some of the cheapest outlets in some cases but even if they are not at least your going to get what you ordered

I agree with what has been said already. If you noticed, for the lower price lens, they are trying to sell you a set of no-name filters for $300!

Please note the pictures of the two lenses priced at $499 and $899 at the site you are looking, are exactly the same, unless that is a mistake (albeit a gross one.) Canon makes a standard non L version of the 24-105 that is much cheaper at $599 instead of $1149 for 24-105L. I have the L version and the non-L versions' links to B&H below for you:

I just noticed this is the same company whose advertisement for a 24-105 appears on the FM Canon Forum page.

Yeah... kind of where I got to thinking about the question...
Like in... if this site is a scam, why is it always showing up on this (FM) site??

I didn't see it on my Mac (adds are blocked), but when I was scanning the Buy & Sell board on my iPad it and several other ads from the same place show up routinely....

Guess the long and short of it is that just because a site has good boards and good information, they have to keep the doors open.... advertisement is often the way to support (basically) free sites...

Thanks for all the opinions / info....

Mick

The word on the street is that we can no longer trust the ResellerRatings site the way we used to. Apparently there is now a way to game their ratings, and this has reportedly led to some "bad guys" getting high rating numbers.

I don't know anything about the specific vendor in the original post — I did not click the links and I don't plan to — but there are a few hints in this thread that suggest caution.

- As you point out, there are no multiple models of this lens, much less one with a plastic mount.

- "Too good to believe" prices are almost always a give-away that something fishy is going on.

"If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is."

"When in doubt, doubt."

;-)

Too good to be true = SCAM!!!

That lens is worth more than $499 USED! --- Either this is an honest mistake and they won't honor the price because they don't have to -- false advertising BS notwithstanding -- or they are a SCAM and will try to switch you to the $899 version... which is still too cheap.. http://www.adorama.com/CA24105AFU.html

... unless the $899 version is a refurb, in which case, they're nailing you for an extra $150... http://www.adorama.com/CA24105AFUR.html

RUN! don't walk away from this place!! RUN FAST!!

I tried to order a "too good to be true" deal on a 100-400 8-9 years ago... After I clicked to buy it, I got a call & was asked if I wanted to up grade to the metal mount W/ lens hood for $400 more... They insisted this lens had two versions....

Titanium multi cut black edition, c'mon! I do pity the fools who get sucked in by these clowns though.

In the sidebar it does say they offer Hassel free returns, so if your 'blad ever needs servicing...

WOW! Missed that the first time around..... Are people really this stupid?!?!? What purpose will a titanium filter ring serve other than drive the price up? That part is under never under any stress at all..... !

I just called them to try to order the $499 version and see what they say.... my curiosity is killing me to see what their angle is. I got a recording saying they were closed from past Thursday until tomorrow (Tuesday)..... I'll call them then and report back..... Should be entertaining to say the least.....

If you click the Specs tab it shows that the cheaper lens is "Imported model" vs. "USA model" for the normally-priced one. Still, being gray market doesn't explain a $400 price difference. I would bet that this is really intended to be the 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 STM, which generally goes for $599 for the USA model.
