It is just a personal thing, and I'm sure other feel differently, but I feel like you do. If I had 11mm I might well occasionally find a use for it, but in my own photography it doesn't feel like a priority for me. (Who knows, though... maybe I'll change my mind!)

I'm not sure I'm excited about 11mm either. However, my hope is that 14-21 is basically almost distortion free and super sharp.

Super sharp on what though? The 16-35/4 is fine on the 1Ds III. Canon has had no higher resolution bodies in many years.

What? Once you shoot 11mm, you'll get hooked and never like boring focal lengths again.

It's not enough pixels for me on Canon. Maybe it will work on a Sony?

$2,900 ... pretty discouraging ... but, I am glad that Canon created the lens. Makes me wonder about the price on the new high MP body. Thankfully, I have my humble Rokinon 14mm 2.8; which is wide enough for me.

Great news! Practically confirmed debut.

Very exciting lens, although it may be some time before I get it, having the Samyang 14, 17 TSE, and the 16-35L II.

The lens sounds great. It's the price tag makes you do a double take.

Ouch on the price. However, if it's as good or better than the 14 F/2.8 II and the 16-35 F/4 IS, then the price would make sense.

Let's not forget the Tamron 15-30/2.8 VC that has just been released before the new year.

And if the AF can match the 16-35/2.8L II, it'll be a smash hit

I don't think anyone seriously expects it will.

If the past and present is any indication, 3rd party lens manufacturers can easily develop optically great lenses, but seem to have trouble rivaling USM and IS technology, at least to some degree.
While OS, VC, HSM and PZD are very fine on their own and do their job very well, they are certainly not equal to canon's counterparts in terms of outright performance.

I usually say OMMV when giving an opinion, but I don't think it's necessary in this case.

Of course, if Tamron pulled that off, that would be awesome.
I would certainly be in line to purchase one, that's for sure.

P.S.
This comes from a happy owner of several sigma lenses and a fan of their latest offerings.

If that price is correct, I think I'll hold onto my 8-15L/16-35 f/4L combo. Besides, the fisheye is a lot of fun in certain situations.

I sure could use 11mm rectilinear for cramped interior photos like on boats/yachts.

Kudos to Canon for coming up with another exciting new wide angle lens! I am not going for it yet since I rarely do indoor shooting where I would see most use for it, but it is definitely another very good ultra wide angle alternative and might add nicely as rectlinear option to the 8-15/4 fisheye lens.

For $2900 it better be sharp! I wonder what the weight will be... thinking it's gotta be more than 900g.

Great idea for a lens. For me, if this lens is smaller than the 16-35 f4, then I'm interested. Price is bad though, but will probably drop. I think 11mm is a bit of overkill, 12mm would have been fine. This will work nicely with the 24-70mm.

There is no way this is smaller than the 16-35L. I am guessing it is more the size of the 17TSE at a minimum.

Holding the 16-35 up to the screen and trying to judge (guess), it looks like it will be considerably shorter than the 16-35, but slightly larger in diameter.
