New D7100s are going for $950 after $250 instant rebate and refurbs are going for $865 ($869 from Cameta with 1-year warranty). That's 'only' $85 difference. If you were in the market for this camera which way would you go? Thanks!

Depends on what $85 is worth to you.

I'd buy new right now. But as a practical matter you won't notice a difference, except the box and eventual resale...

Refurbished cameras may be fine mechanically, but often they have a lot of cosmetic wear.
It's not like buying an open box item.
(at least from what I have seen)

It's not worth saving a few bucks.

My D700 came with 6 clicks on the shutter. Not a mark on the body. My D800 came with 29 clicks and I never was able to find a mark on it. Now any marks were inflicted by me.

Refurbs can be a real steal. But at $85 difference I'd pay for a longer warranty (Refurbs are 90 day warranties)

If it was anyone but Nikon USA I'd agree but the warranty bs that I have gone through with them has made me ponder many a Nikon purchase...YMMV

The Purchase of a Nikon refurb through Cameta has always come with an extended warranty, which lengthens it to a full year at no additional cost.

Adorama offers the same, but for a small additional price.

As far as the condition of a Nikon factory refurb, the ones I've bought look just like new. No physical flaws at all. I think they've always been that way.

I wouldn't buy it for only an $85 savings though.

Where have you seen this? That's not a complaint that I recall ever seeing here regarding Nikon factory refurbs.

Nikon's US website has 11% off refurb bodies today only (11/11/2014). That puts the D7100 at $800.96. That might be worth considering if you act quick.

Very cool.My experiences have been from what I have seen sold as factory refurbished at retail stores. Some looked sweet, a few looked definitely used.

I've had refurbished bodies come from Nikon with 10,000 on them as well.

It is always russian roulette with camera bodies.

After having Nikon attempt to repair my D7110 THREE times and having the focus just as far off each time (even with sending in my 600 VR and other lenses with it), telling me each time it was "within specifications" and then getting a new one that worked perfectly out of the box....I am sure they could likely have sold it as a refurb.

Personally I would stay away.

I bought a Nikon D7100 as a refurb in July for $800 from Adorama. Anything above that is too much!

I bought a 7DII for wildlife after that was announced and sold the D7100 for $725. It had under 7,000 shots on it when I sold it and looked like new, except a very small mark on the base where I had an L plate mounted.

If you didn't buy at Nikon today because of tax and shipping, check the Buy and Sell. $725 is pretty ballpark. Pick carefully and you should get a good deal!

Good luck.

I've just become suspicious of the refurbs since they do not have to disclose why the camera was returned to them. Some of the refurbished bodies you'll see are bodies that customers returned for no reason in particular. Others may have been returned due to bad focus, faulty electronics, etc.

That's why I say it's russian roulette and you can easily acquire a lemon that will have problems. I'm convinced 100% that is why they do not provide the same warranty support.
