Thanks BeeBalm! Yes I kinda liked that shot because the beak of the GBH is pointing out just like the branch on the opposite tree trunk. I chose BW for processing because the scene was about the same kind of tonal grey to help hide the GBH even more.

I got this 500 a few months ago and compared to my 300 2.8L IS that I had (even at 420 w/ 1.4x), I'm finding it quite challenging getting critical focus handheld even when I have the shutter speed sitting at 1/2x-3x FL.

Probably just poor technique on my part. I also don't usually switch from IS Mode I to II because I usually forget when I'm right in the middle of shooting and all of a sudden a bird takes off so I'm not using the IS in panning mode.
