It seems the long (as in like nearly a decade ) fabled 100-400 II really does exist.

Assuming that this unicorn doesn't prove to be just another narwhal, my biggest question will be how well it balances with a hand on the zoom ring, and whether it lends itself to the rapid FL changes that are sometimes useful when shooting field sports. If it's a compact, light weight design, that would be no issue at all. Improvements to IS, AF speed, and wide open optical performance ought to be significant, considering Canon's track record.

OMG, it's a telescoping push pull retractable zooming FL changer.

Not DO, for sure, just regular refractive optics.

It does look like they are using what they learned on the 70-300L with this design.

I for one think I will miss the push-pull, but who knows, maybe it will be OK.

Now, whether I upgrade from my current 100-400 or not will strictly be determined by the cost.

This pic looks like the hood may rotate with a CPL attached.

Should be a great lens. Curious about the introductory price in USD.. My guess is $2499, and I'm probably low.

yeah probably north of 2k . 2.5k is likely close to the target price .

But I cant help thinking that 400mm is now a tad short for the market now . for quite a probable premium over the very good 70-300 you gain a 100mm .
I think more logical in this market would be a 150-500/5.6

Yeah it's interesting how the 100-300L and 100-400L were similar and now the 70-300L and 100-400 II seem similar in overall design (Although this time they seemed to have changed things up a bit optically as the 70-300L lacks fluorite and the 100-400 II uses fluorite, perhaps this means that the 100-400 II will be able to fully match the 70-300L optically wide and long?? of course there is more to it than that).

I will be a contrarian, I think this sucker will be south of $2k, my guess, $1800 if not the offering price, it will be the settled price within 12 months. Market has changed and I suspect canon wants to move volumes of this lens.

My 100-400 is barely used and quite good, but this would be tempting upgrade. A 7DII + 100-400LII could be a permanent backpack during biking / hiking for the once in ever 10 hikes event.

Don't know much about Nikon's lens but there 3 new ones from Tamron and Sigma that may have an impact on what they can get for the Nikon in the future. Since they are here on paper now Canon would be remiss not to take their price level in consideration when pricing a new 100-400.
