Hello all!

What are your thoughts having multiple websites for core aspects of your business? I have seen many photographers including one of our primary completion that does this.

They have a main site:
Example: photostudio.com

Then they have a site dedicated for seniors:
Example: photostudioseniors.com

Then they have a site dedicated for weddings:
Example: photostudioweddings.com

Or would you prefer to have the different sites linked under subdomains?
Examples:
seniors.photostudio.com
weddings.photostudio.com

Or the standard way of having (1) core website.. with a bunch of dropdown menus under the selections to have it filled with all the detailed information? What do you think is the best choice for the whole SEO thing, and ease of use for potential, current, and future clients?

Hi Matt,

I have multiple web sites for my business and find that it works very well. My main web site is run as a blog, a second web site is an online image gallery with searchable media and a third is specifically for aerial photography. An additional site is with Zenfolio and tends to bring in some business that hasn't found me other ways and a fifth site that I'm working on is purely for downloadable stock images.

Although these sites share some content, if someone is looking for aerial images they often come through the specific site as Google seems to pick it up well. This may be overkill but it certainly is different traffic coming in. Something I do is link these sites together in dropdown menus so that my readers can navigate between the sites.

It definitely is very good for SEO.

I had multiple sites for my main business areas when I promoted on the web.
Some aspects I didn't want seen together like T&I and glamour work. The pettyness and sensationalist attitudes of some people are too much to risk the rabble rousing mentality they could create.

The other reason was to appear as a specialist. When I see long lists of markets people work in, I think they can't be very good at any of them. I wanted to be seen as the XXXX Guy. The specialist, the guy that only knows the one thing they are after.

It worked well for me as did the search engine placement. It also makes it much easier to make a site look professional by keeping continuity in the theme of the pics.
The other big advantage is you can tailor prices for that market to what you want without having to explain why weddings are once price, glam is another and portraits is another. Doesen't worry everyone but some aren't very comfortable with it and it probably is best avoided being seen by the client if possible.

Sites are so cheap these days and there are plenty of hosts that will do multiple domain names on the same account.
The ability to specialise at one specific market is a great opportunity to make the most from that group.

I wouldn't do it any other way now.

I would divide the main topics such as commercial which could include business headshots, product and maybe even real estate and then a site for weddings, family and kids. No commercial clients wants to see weddings and wedding clients care nothing about business shots but because they might be planning a family will look at that area.
