I tried to search for a thread on this but couldn't come up with anything. For those of you who use your 5dmk3 with the 500f4 II or 600f4 II, what has your experience been? I've read about some focus and tracking issues when paired with the 600 but I'm not sure how often that actually happens. Thank you for your thoughts.

what kinds of things will you be shooting?

i had great results w/ the 5d iii + 600 (+ 2x iii or 1.4x iii).

but i would recommend a grip to balance things out...

+1, I'm very pleased with the results from my 5D3 + 600 II (+ mk3 extenders). No issues whatsoever.

I'm not as pleased with my 500 F4 II, I actually prefer my 300 2.8 with a 1.4 III but I probably just need to get used to it.

I have been nothing but impressed with the 5DIII and 600II. I have been using the combo for over a year now. When I first started using it I didn't feel like it was a huge leap forward but now when I go back and look at files from my 500IS and 1DsIII body I can see the difference is quite clear. The 600II and 5DIII focuses more accurate and the image quality is better. That is not to say the older pieces are bad in fact they are excellent by any standard but you are only kidding your self if you don't think the newer stuff is better.

I wish I could go out and shoot with it every day, well maybe nearly every day. That's my only disappointment.

Both 500 II and 600II work perfectly on 5D III both with and without 1.4x III.

500II and 5D III light enough that they can be hand held and taken on significantly long hikes into the field. Just make sure to have appointment for message or chiropractic adjustment the next day

I will be shooting wildlife, primarily birds. What grip do you use?

Thank you so much for the replies everyone. That really puts my mind at ease to know that the focusing problem isn't a widespread one.

I shoot primarily birds with a 600 II and a 1.4. Absolutely stellar with no micro adjustment.

I've shot extensively with the 5D3 ( I do bird photography) and the 500 I with 1.4x III and it does a great job at BIF. The 1Dx does focus faster but the 5D3 is quite good and much better/faster than the 7D.

No focussing problems for me. 600 v2 and 5diii. In fact my 5diii focuses well with my 200-400, 100-400, and 70-200 and even my 100-400 with 1.4x which is really a challenge. I have picked off eagles in flight with my 100-400 1.4x easily.

However I do find that the 7d or 7dii focuses better on spot areas through the bush than my 5diii. Eg. if you find a bear behind the brush I am more confident picking off the focus with my 7d than my 5diii because the spot focussing for static objects works better on 7d is my experience.
