I'm assuming it is still a possibility, even if you buy one new. I don't think Canon has changed the design since inception, and from what I have read online it is the design of a cable that flexes during zoom operations that can fray over time to cause the dreaded Err01.
I had to get mine fixed last year and I believe it was around $250. I'm not thrilled about it, but like you said, it is an ideal focal length range and decent image quality for the price.
