p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Replacement suggestion for 24.70 f/2.8

Hello Canon Shooters,

I'm downgrading my kit and I would love any suggestions for a 24-70 f/2.8 replacement (lower priced option). Sigma? Tamron? Looking for a similar range zoom, f/2.8. Would be using on a 40D or 50D.

I would be looking to pick something up used here on the board to save cost.

Thanks for your input!
Chiara

well, assuming the 24-70 you mean is the original, the only cheaper options I can think of that are f/2.8 are the old sigma 24-70 and the tamron 28-75. On a 40d or 50d, I personally would rather have an ef-s 17-55/2.8IS but that is me. If you are OK with a 24-105/4IS that is a very good lens as well

tamron 17-50 2.8 non-OS (maybe sigma 16-50 2.8 OS?)

if you really do like the longer range even on APS-C and need f/2.8 then Tamron 24-70 VC or, to save a lot money and if 28mm is enough and slow AF is OK, the amazing Tamron 28-75 2.8.

Tamron 24-70 f2.8 vc
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non-vc

Both are excellent

The Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS is a bargain at about $350 new from Japan. If you don't want to take the risk of ordering from Japan on eBay, look for a "like new" used one that someone else purchased that way.

That is rated as the sharpest "standard zoom" by DxO on the D7100. The Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS was the sharpest zoom overall.

The Tamron 24-70 2.8 zoom gets good ratings, but it is quite a bit more expensive.

I am also thinking about the Canon 24-70 4.0 IS. That or the 24-105 4.0 IS would be a nice part of a 16-35 4.0 II, 24-50 4.0 IS, and 70-200 4.0 IS kit.

My recommendation would be the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS - awesome little lens, basically an "L" for crop-sensor bodies & they are fairly affordable nowadays.

Best bang for buck (while still caring about image quality) would be the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

The Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS is lighter than the Canon, shorter, and sharper on the long end than the aging Canon lens. It's better than anything Tamron has in the range, and rather affordable.

If you need something longer, consider Sigma's 17-70/2.8-4 OS | C.

Haha, "aging Canon lens"! Didn't it just come out only a few years back, c. 2006? It's pretty new compared to the 50 2.5, 50 1.8, 17-40, 70-200 4L, 200 2.8L, 100-400. etc.

Well, it's a fast standard zoom- and it could use an update. The Sigma is a circa 2010 lens, and will also likely see a 'sports' update sometime soon too.

The main issue with the 17-55/2.8 IS USM is that while it's a well-rounded lens, it could be revised to be more in line with the performance of the 24-70/2.8L II, especially with a smaller, lighter competitor that produces better results, along with the existence of Sigma's significantly sharper 18-35/1.8 Art, and their lightweight 17-70/2.8-4.

I suspect an update of such a recent design would be only skin-deep: new cosmetics (black coffee mug look), new moniker ("II") and offshore production. Okay, maybe updated IS. My only beef with the 2006 design was the tendency to flare easily with the afternoon sun in the frame. My 15-85 USM is slightly sharper and a lot more flare resistant so I sold my 17-55 last year.

I'm also thinking of getting rid of my 24-70mm, but mainly because I don't use it enough. I see the 24-105 as the best alternative.

Yup- loved my 15-85, would buy it again if needed. But the 17-55 should be sharper, especially at the longer end of the range, and an update, particularly one with say weather sealing, would definitely be welcome.

I'd definitely recommend checking out the 24-70/4L IS "Macro". It's consistently sharper, especially when stopped down to diffraction (f/11 and narrower), has better IS, and especially has faster AF, while being smaller and lighter.

I think you mean an 'ART' update as its highly unlikely a standard crop zoom would be considered a 'sports' lens

anyway , I notice a few people mention the sigma . Ive never tried it but I have tried the 17-70 OS and I did have the 17-55 . and I have to say the 17-55 was a bl@@dy good lens . I Moved onto a 5D3 and selling the 17-55 was the only regret

It could be either, honestly, though I'd figure that Sigma would want to play up fast AF and thus use 'Sports' instead of 'Art', like they used for the 18-35 .

Why are you 'downgrading'? Does that imply selling and trading your current kit for other gear?

Keep that 24-70 and match it to a great secondhand body - unless you mean downsizing...

I think the best choices for you would be deffo Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS or newer Sigma 18-35 1.8 (depends on your needs in focal length).

There are not so many obvious choices for fast normal zoom for crop which would match 24-70 2.8 on FF.
I want to invite you to read this thread. Yeah, this is from Nikon' part of the forum, but there are good opinions about main rivals - Tamron 17-50 2.8 (both VC and non VC versions), old Sigma 18-50 2.8, Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS, Tokina 16-50 2.8, Sigma 18-35 1.8.
Maybe it will help you somehow
