A bit of a mystery regarding peacock butterflies. The shots below are of what I think is a newly emerged peacock butterfly we found in our dining room on October 26th trying to get out via the closed French windows. This is the 4th peacock butterfly we have found in our dining room since August 9th. I've not really got any idea of how it got there as there is no vegetable matter/plants etc in the dining room. I did see a peacock butterfly fly into the dining room in the summer through open French windows and fly out again after a quick tour of the room. We haven't had the French windows open for at least a month now.
Anyway shots from 3 different cameras (Nikon1J2, canon 600D/90mm tamron, canon 5dmk2/MPE-65).

Wonderful set Brian

No idea on why they seem to be hatching from your dining room. My 11 year old boy saw your images and was curious as to what animal it is trying to mimic (looks like it has eyes on the wings).

Thanks for the comments John.
Not sure but think this is just a large eye startle effect rather than a specific insect mimic.

Wow what a unique and cool thing to happen Brian. And for it to just happily sit on your hand and pose.
Fascinating close up with the face........the eyelashes in #3.....
Thanks for sharing the happening...

Thanks Lee. In #1 I'd walked down the garden with it on my hand wings closed assuming it would fly off. It didn't, just opened it's wings and sat there. So I went back into the house , got a camera and went outside again and it still sat there

What a wonderful mystery. How did they survive in your dinning room ?
Gorgeous shots Brian. So wonderful when nature stops by and visits for awhile.

Brian

We get them in our cellar/air raid shelter at this time of year and many overwinter there. I also have no idea what they find to eat, not if they come in immediately after emerging or if we have a chrysalis creche!

Lovely shots, whatever the answer

Nature is reflective and butterfly's are symbolic of transformation. Maybe something is going on in your life you haven't put your finger on yet. Maybe it's your affinity for nature coming home.

Lovely images anyway ... :-)

Me too! This morning I had the same happen in our south-facing lounge.

As the sun shone through our picture window on the coldest, frosty, morning of the autumn, I found a fresh-looking Peacock fluttering against the inside of the window. Again, no ready explanation can be offered.
