Bmetcan,
He's winking because he has all the girls...
The can be very hard to find. They are Desert, not Rocky Mountain Bighorns. Smaller by about 80-100 pounds. Their range is smaller, more limited throughout the west. Last year I didn't see any. In 2012 I had several good days. The herds are small and the total population is small, and the Canyonlands area is huge. Plus, they often blend right in, except for the white rump.
When I do find them, and I've settled in, and their fear is gone, they often will come closer and closer out of curiosity to look at you, which can get you nice portraits.
I find animals by burning a ton of gasoline in my Jeep and hiking a lot. And listening for rock noise. And going out several times a week. Like they say, the more I try the luckier I get. But I go out prepared for animals or landscapes, so whichever surfaces. Many times nothing materializes. I've been extremely lucky in the last week however.
