First time poster here. Shot North West Regional IPO Championship. It's a three phase event for working dogs (obedience/tracking/protection). Had two camera set up, both D810 with a 70-200mm 2.8 and a 400mm 2.8 on a monopod. I shot manual, Auto ISO. Processed in Lightroom, finished in Nik + Photoshop.

It was my first sport event. I rented the 400mm and was glad because my 70-200 with 1.4TC didn't provide the reach I needed. I normally shoot portraiture so I never processed so many images at once- real learning experience. I would appreciate any feedback from experience sport photographers.

2) 'Hold and Bark' - Dog has located decoy and making sure the bad guy doesn't move (not allowed to touch decoy)

3) Stopping the 'Attack on Handler'- Neutral decoy walking ahead of handler suddenly turns and attacks.

From a technical standpoint, everything is spot on, but from an outsider who knows nothing about the training, the only photo that really appeals to me from a peak action standpoint is #5. I realize that the officials involved in the training, may feel otherwise.

From a training perspective, I think you did OK. Where you have the hold situation, there's really not a lot to tell me there's a suspect there. As far as action goes, #5 is by far the best. I would like to see some more on the sleeve

Where you would normally want closer crop for many things, I think this is a case where a wider shot would be more appropriate. This is especially true for #1 & #6. As far as anyone can tell, #1 is a dog in a down stay. About the only giveaway is the foamy mouth. In #6, he's on a search but again, no idea-is he chasing a ball or air scenting or what?

Like Paul said, technically, very well done.

Thank you for this. I had not considered an outsiders view as these were shot for the handlers. But I should have. The term 'peak action standpoint' makes sense as any one not familiar with the sport could appreciate and is something I will consider as I make the selections going forward.

You comments make sense. I might have been guilty of trying to fill the frame, and perhaps at the detriment of the story.

My take away is the #5 dynamic energy shot is an obvious keeper but other than that there must be a better story and maybe relaxing the field of view will help. I am going to review the set with this in mind.

Slightly off subject- the event started at 6:30am. All the images posted here were late morning with better light The earlier shots were very high ISO as I was using 2000sec rate. How slow a shutter speed would be acceptable in for this type of motion? I didn't want to risk not freezing action and ended up with some not so good detail due to noise.

Also I shot with Auto ISO evaluative metering. I don't shoot sports normally, and I wasn't sure how well I would do without. It was important that I had keepers from each team. Was this the right choice or should I have exposed for faces and let the rest fall where it may?

I too can't connect with most of the photos but they look sharp, clean and technically good
