p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A Few Desert Bighorn Sheep

I finally caught a few Desert Bighorns to share again.

I hadn't found any Desert Bighorns for two years out in Canyonlands, and I had looked all over. Then, the other day I spotted a small group of them. Just two different rams and family unit, but I'm hoping they will stay in this area for some head cracking as it's getting to the rut for them.

I sort of emphasized the portraits as I like the crazy eyes...

Also, the first one is standing on the edge of about a 500 foot sheer cliff. They are quite fearless.

Thanks for looking!

First and last for me, too. I'm always amazed at how well the navigate steep rocky slopes.

The good thing about Desert Bighorn Sheep in Canyonlands is they are not hunted, so when you finally find a group of them, they don't run for their lives. They do keep their distance of course, but a 400mm lens on a tripod can get you some nice unhurried shots.

They are all wonderful, Craig. That first shot clearly illustrates the rugged terrain that they traverse. Their footing is amazing. Great close ups as well. Especially like the last. Good luck with witnessing the rutting.

Thanks again guys!

It's all luck out there. I hope I do get some nice rut images, but they could move on to a basically inaccessible location at any time. It's their turf after all!

That guy in the last shot, he's so young and perfect. I have a feeling the old battle scarred ones are going to beat him up pretty good...

Thanks Ed, yes they do fall from time to time. The rocks are unstable, not the sheep...
