Anyone had experience with this?

I just had a chance to try one on my 5D3, and I was shocked at how fast it focused. I mean, it just snapped to the subject, no waiting, whirring or hunting.

Is that normal?

If so, I'm thinking it might be time to assess my lineup, and do some trading/selling of lenses to get one of these.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that doesn't like it. It gets very high ratings on the reviews side of FM. I’m very happy with mine.

yah, umm, 5D3 + 100L is kind of photographic nirvana.

its a great lens and mine focuses quickly too. There was quite a learning curve on the DOF though

I tried that one on my 1D Mark IV during my travels (a fellow shooter uses this as a part of a 3 prime kit for videography). It netted me one of the sharpest pictures which I posted in the fall thread, as well as my first true insect macros. But I guess most of the modern 100ish macros are like this: razor sharp and fast to focus.

That being said, in challenging light/on low contrast targets you will get some hunting - as with any/most macros. Where light is plentiful and contrast high of course it is quick - push it and it will focus through the range searching for a lock.

It's an amazing lens. I prefer it over the 70-200 IS 2.8 II for portraits. Probably the best kept secret in the Canon lens lineup.
