This was shot at Bonny Doon Beach. As the sun was setting past the horizon, I noticed a guy sitting by the cliff staring at the muted colors. Too bad he didn't turn around. The real explosion of colors was behind him. Still regardless of the view, we each got a tranquil scene. This shot didn't require too much blending. Only 2 shot exposure. One for the water/cliffs and one for the clouds. I usually clone out people in my photos but I thought the guy there was interesting. What do you all think?

Shot with Canon 5D MK II /w 16-35 F4 L IS.

Ok so a bunch of crops.

#1 - original

#2 - cropped foreground but left a curl

#3 - cropped sky and foreground

#4 - left more sky but cropped foreground

#5 - horizontal crop

What do you guys think of the crop vs original?

Jason

Original

Cropped the foreground off more

Hey Jason,

Man... I love the top 2/3rds of this shot! So I am guessing you can guess what my suggestion would be...

Jim

PS. Love those clouds

Jason,
I'm one of those who believes a person or 2 in a landscape adds interest and perspective. Your person is so small that I had to search for him, then found him less than interesting.
I agree with Jim about the cropping. The upper 2/3rds bu themselves would be a nice comp.

I like this image. the foreground rock seems a bit too tight and clipped

I read ya, I read ya :P. I uploaded a crop less of the foreground and more on the top. The original image I cropped more for the foreground and less up top. I just reversed it.

Thanks David. I cropped the lower portion off and put more on the sky. Yeah, at the time I only had a wide angle lens with me and I really wanted to over emphasize the sky and the foreground so that meant the mid ground area was going to be compromised.

Thanks Docsmiles17. I uploaded a new crop.

if you want to go with that crop, go a little higher with the crop as the wave in bottom right corner leads you eye out of the image

Hey Jason,

It's better with the crop, but as our smiling doc suggests, lose that little curl of water. I imagine you liked it because it is moving water, but it's curling is not helping the shot. So I know you can only post a max of 5 photos here (hint to others), but since you are cropping this puppy... how about two crops to try...

1. With the original, just crop off the bottom to right above the top of that curling water. Maybe go to a 4:5 format?

2. With the edit, just crop the bottom off to lose that curl.

My point is there may be too much cloud in #2. I think the amount of clouds in #1 is really about perfect.

Anyway... some thoughts for you to chew on for a midnight snack...

Jim

4 or 5 is my pick. Simpler, more powerful!

Jason,
I like the last, horizontal, crop for the dramatic sky. Also, can see the figure a little better.
