Thanks for sharing, although I highly disagree with this:

"The quality of the bokeh is good although it doesn't stand out"

It's the main thing that stand out!

I've said it before; if you're doing snap-shots, it'll be almost identical to the 50/1.8G; but when you need it, this lens contains a new world...

jason, gotta ask about #3, did you add blur in post? cuz that darling girl is the only thing in focus. the ground to either side of her has no area within critical focus, just the ground directly beneath her. i think its a fantastic shot.

No blur added. I don't even think I brought down the clarity.

The review was surprising. The bokeh is the best part to me and the sharpness at 1.4 is fine, but not amazing.

And I do agree with Jason about how when you use it as a general lens, like shooting at f5.6, the other 50mm options produce almost the same results. But when you shoot at 1.4, magic happens.

When I read the review earlier, I thought about posting it in the 58/1.4G thread- but I didn't want to pollute the thread with such a derogatory review where the main points are missed!

As much as I love this lens I ended up returning it I just couldn't justify the price... Even though it's probably worth the price tag.

I'll read the review when i get a chance but I never trusted Photozone. They pretty much bash 80% of the lenses...

It's all a function of perspective. If you want a fast AF F-mount normal prime with great rendering at wider apertures and sharp results when stopped down, the 58/1.4G is your lens, and it's light to boot. Most review sites don't really go so far as to draw that conclusion .

I have to say for portraits it get results that are very similar to what I get with my classic (~100 yr. old) lenses shot on my 4x5. This really is a special lens, much like the DC lenses are.

I really want this lens. Whether I can afford it plus all the other things is another thing

I gotta admit, I hated the lens at first (my first copy) and I ended up returning it. But what the 58mm made me realize is how little i use my 50mm. After returning my 58mm, i used the 50G a lot. I mean, A LOT! That's when I relized that I needed that 58mm again... so I bought it.
