I have actually posted this thread in another forum as i thought it was about the camera, but i think it hit less owners of these large telephoto zooms there than over here. So maybe you guys can chime in and have some answers:

Thanks.

If I understand your inquiry right, I am afraid you will not find very many people who use third party cameras with their long lenses. Whether people shoot sports or wildlife, the best available AF is essential to those photographers, and manual focusing is just not an option, regardless of other advanced(?) features that might be built in such 3rd party cameras.

I fully understand this, but like said in the other post; I can imagine a situation where your subject stays put and you have the time to screw on a a7r to get a higher detailed shot. Besides, i use MF with live view alot with my 500.

I have stuck my 500/4L IS on an E-P1 and X-E2 for fun, but I would never bother to take this lens somewhere without an EOS body to put on it; preferably my 1DIV or 1DX.

I have an SMCP-M 400/5.6 that I bought specifically for use with my X-Pro 1 (now X-E2), but I never use it, and so it's in the "to sell" pile. OTOH, I recently bought a Canon SL1 for use with my 70-200/4L IS for travel, and it's great! I'd never bother putting any of my long lenses on an A7R, even though I might buy one for scenic photos.

That is the reason why i bought the a7r, for scenic shots. But since its small form factor its easy to take with you on shorter trips. (And sure will never be the only body i take with me) Anyway, it seems i will be having to test this combo out myself since i can't seem to find any examples. Hope the metabones adapter arrives soon.

I'm sure the 500/4L IS will deliver excellent IQ with the Smart Adapter. I look forward to seeing some examples.

I guess I'm coming from the opposite direction. I'm quite likely to take an A7R with something like the CZ 35-70/3.4 and maybe 18/3.5 ZE as a "light scenic" set when I'm out with my 500/4L IS and 1DIV. Alternatively, if I'm out with my "heavy scenic set" (TS-E 17/4L, 24/3.5L II, CZ 50/2 ZE, CZ 35-70/3.4, CZ 100/3.5, A 150/2.8, and A 200/2.8 APO), I wouldn't bring the 500/4L IS with me (except to leave it in the car, of course).

I almost always have at least two bodies with me, and so not having an EOS body for use with the 500/4L IS just makes no sense, to me.

I never intend to go out with my 500 with the a7r only. In 99% of the cases i will have it mounted on an eos body. But i do a lot of photography from the car. That's where weight of the gear doesn't matter. Now sometimes your subject decides to stay/rest/feed a while giving you the chance to try different things, e.g. mounting another body.
