p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Should I let go of my 400??

Was reading about Nikon's 13mm f/5.6 lens on KR's site and came across this paragraph. Got me thinking if I should get rid of my 400. Lucky I sold my 500 last year.

I quote: "Great animal photographers know how to get right up to wild animals; they don't need 400mm lenses. Great sports photographers get themselves invited to the athlete's home or out onto the field; they don't get stuck in a press box a mile away."

. . . Unbelievable someone who claims to be a photographer could say stuff like this? I had to laugh.

FYI: I have nothing against Ken and I am not wanting to bash him.

Have a super day.

Grant

Oh my, you do realise what you have started don't you? To save others the time and bother of posting, I'll summarise the thread that would have developed:

Ken is the anti-christ.

Or to paraphrase Kenneth Williams, he is a cult.

All great animal photographers go to their 13mm f5.6 at MFD for the money shots.

Let go of the 400.

Sell the 400, and buy some of this:

That way you'll smell more like what KR is selling.

I get invited to athletes houses all the time, and then uninvited by the police.

A case could be made for selling a 400m f2.8 and then buying a used 80-400mm AFS, and using the net difference to fund a trip to somewhere really great to take wildlife photos.

The best shots I have seen of lions have been with wide angle lenses at a close distance.

The wildlife I like to shoot has a tendency to eat people. I think I'll stick with my long lenses and risk KR thinking I'm not much of a wildlife photographer.

Besides, the 600 f/4 looks way cooler than the 18-70. All the other people who also don't know anything about photography will think I'm a pro. The great photos are just a bonus!

I'll only add that if you decide to wash that down with his Kool-Aid, I'll take that 400 off your hands for you.

Although it is fun to attach a PW to a remote body and 14-24 the little critters.

I want to go to Usain Bolts house.

Because apparently, taking a photo of the 100mm sprint final is not going to be a worthy for Sports Illustrated unless he is running up and down is hallway at home... And I would have captured it all from 1 foot away with a wide angle lens.

Oh, please. Ken is such a stud that his withering gaze alone would turn away a polar bear.

And if that didn't work, he could kill it with his asinine commentary on camera gear. Even a bear's head would explode at the sheer stupidity of it all.

Or KR might try catching a photo of this lady with his wide angle. When she poked her head through the thicket my first thoughts were, 'Wish I had my 14-24 on!'
