As you can tell from the proliferation of posts from the Dolly Sods/Canaan Valley/Blackwater Falls area recently, this is an increasingly popular photo destination, especially in the fall. Most photographers, and the general public for that matter, never venture far from the (admittedly excellent) locations at or near the roads and front country trails. Yet Dolly Sods in particular has a wealth of scenic opportunities deeper back on the trails, and even for off-trail bushwhacking, if you are willing ease yourself across an occasional bog and stream ford, and wander aimlessly on subalpine hillsides.
These are a couple from an exploration earlier this month down a trail that ended at the edge of a bog with an untracked hill on the other side. The weather wasn't conducive to the best shots, as I had to wait interminably for a peak of sun through the clouds and a break in the strong wind gusts to coincide. But these two worked out OK, and it looks like a good area to return to.
