Thank you VinnieJ!

@Lorac, I will confirm F8 and F9 are really the sweet spot of this lens at 600mm. Although if you completely fill the frame, F7.1 is acceptable and depending on the light F6.3 is also. I generally shoot BIF at F8 and stationary birds at F9 if light allows..

This is about the best I can muster wide open at 500mm (both captive)

These are wonderful Kristofer. I will do some more testing this weekend. Hopefully the weather will behave.

Thanks for the confirmation. "Acceptability" is subjective. I would not find these wide open shots acceptable, others will. Some consider the price of the lens and factor that into "acceptability", not me. To me feather detail, fur detail, requires a higher level of detail resolution for acceptability, where other kinds of shots might be ok wide open with a lens like this.

Glad you're happy with the lens.

Lora

I think price has to be considered in the equation. I always say its a great lens for the price. What are the other options at 500 and 600mm? The Nikon primes at 10K? Of course they will be sharper, but myself and many other certainly can't afford them. You also loose the hand holdability to a certain extent. What are you currently shooting?

Since I am also in the camp of "not acceptable", I'm holding out for the Sigma 150-600 "S". Not as much in the telephoto range, but Sigma has been able to match or beat the big brands with other lenses for a lot less money like the 35/1.4 and 50/1.4 ART series. I also am not interested in a lens that needs F8-11 to get closer to acceptable. That's just me though, as said before, some people will be thrilled with the performance of this lens and that's great. I don't think anyone expects it to match a 600/4 prime, but the performance gap in this case is larger than usual IMHO.

Skeptics ought to take a good look at Kristofer Rowe's photo stream. His results, I think, speak for themselves. It's very good at f/8 and okay wide open. You do have to know how to shoot, but folks for whom the Tamron's price is a hard upper limit could certainly spend their money less wisely.

Is this acceptable for you, for wide open sharpness? This is hand held on DX. I think the limitations of this lens when unfairly compared to the big primes are 1 1/3rd stops of light and AF performance. Sharpness is definitely not it.

I've used the combo D810+Tamron 150-600 for only one week. But I personally find this zoom performs better on my D4s, especially from about 400 to 600mm.

To nail focus or track small birds, obviously the Tamron is not as fast as my 600 VR or 400/2.8+TC but nearly as good as the 200-400/4+TCx1.4 on the D4s. Its AF reliability remains however very good.

D4s, Tamron 150-600, @600mm, f/7.1, handheld. AF-C & Group Area.
