It's not often that you get light like this.

So, so many similar images to be had on this beautiful day near Cabot, Vermont.

Cameron - You're right, the light is lovely in this pleasing pastoral view.

That said, I believe the "story" in this scene lies in the colorful distant woods and the field in front of it.

Thus, I'd like to see a view where you crop out the extraneous greenery in the foreground which detracts from the main center of interest.

Hi Cameron,

This could have been a really cool shot since the fall colors that are way way back in the shot look nice. Over half of this fall color shots is just grass, with some distracting looking sticks poking up. The shot here to have would have been to have walked across the road. Gotten closer to the actual fall colors. You could have used the field with the furrows as lead in lines as an example. As it is it looks like you just took a snap shot out your backyard.

Before the fall colors fade, get back out and really showcase those colors.

I was shooting during my vacation from the passenger seat in a friend's truck. Didn't have much time to compose.

For some reason, I didn't find the foreground distracting in the original crop.

I also had the crop in mind which I believe most of you were referring to.

Is this it? I like it.

Very nice improvement now that the "center-of-interest," i.e., the fall colors, has been made more prominent.

Thanks for the positive feedback... much appreciated!

Any other critiques, thoughts, or suggestions?

I agree with Chaz, that's better.

I am not sure how many more suggestions you want when these are just drive by snap shots. My only suggestion now would be to have had your friend stop for a few minutes and let you actually compose a shot rather than hoping for the best as the car is moving. It looks like a really cool area which would have been worth stopping for.

I agree... I wish we could have stopped, but our wives were expecting us for dinner.

Normally I would have setup with a tripod and "made" the image instead of taking it. Still, it was a worthwhile drive.

Often times one can find better compositions within the original frame, and I believe that is the case here.

I would make one other crop as a "variation on a theme."

Try cropping the top cloud layer out just above the tall tree on the left. Then you have a more pano view that makes the fall colors even more prominent while you still have all the additional pleasing elements - clouds, sky and golden field.

Just constructive nit-picking on my part since you asked. The scene is lovely as is.

I did not find the fence posts and grassy area to be too distracting. I like it as is. However the cropped one looks quite good too, but I still vote for #1

Yes, Cameron, that's it. Thanks for being willing to entertain the suggestions.

Which version do you prefer?

Personally, I don't think the cropped version is better. I think the converging/diverging lines of the fence & road really contribute to the image. Perhaps if you cropped just enough to put the first fence post in the very bottom left corner of the image, you'd lose some of the expanse of grass and give the trees a bit more prominence without losing the fence/road line.
Just my $.02

Certainly. It's how we all learn, right? I appreciate the feedback!

I like them all, but I prefer them in this order: #3, #1, #2.

Sounds like an interesting tweak. I'll give it a shot.

I still like this basic composition for the very same reasons that you do.

OK, how do these look? Which do you prefer?

EDIT: Changed the crop of the first image in this post.

Too much sky and forground for my taste, would love to see more of the trees

Understand... There are plenty like that... this one simply offered a unique perspective of converging lines and nice light.

I think I like the top one best, because of the wider aspect ratio, longer fence line and more of the tree on the left. My view does seem to be in the minority though. Thanks for considering!
