p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 1Ds2 ISO Question …

Just picked up a Canon 100 f/2 USM in EX condition (thought I might use it for some street) from a local vendor. Plan to shoot some Halloween stuff in typical Halloween lighting environments mostly outdoors, after sunset and beyond with the 100 f/2 mounted to a 1Ds2.

I am curious as to the highest reasonable ISO the 1Ds2 likes. (Haven’t shot the 1Ds2 all that long to know it that well yet). I’ll be using the Center focal point … @ f/2 ( I’ve heard the 100 f/2 to be decently sharp wide open and should give decent backgrounds) … shutter between 1/100 and 1/320 … thinking I’ll be comfortable with 1/200 to 1/250 … manual exposure mode … and all shots handheld … and RAW.

Would ISO 1600 be reasonable with the 1Ds2 ... ?

Thanx,
Jefferson ...

I would use the 1D2N up to 800 comfortably, so I would assume 1600 if your OK with doing some NR in post.

Still look good with 6400 by underexposed 3200 one stops. 1600 is no problem

I shoot with a couple of 1Ds2's all the time and I can confirm Iowa2's and mttran's comments. ISO 1600 if you don't mind some occasional cleanup.

My mouth gets a little dry when I read about boxes with ISO 100-and-something thousand! Guess I'll have to update some day. But the raw files are just so darn workable...

Hey there Jefferson,

I'll echo Iowa2's comments, the 1DMk2N at 800 is fine, at 1600 it requires a bit of PP including some NR; I split those duties between Lightroom and Neat Image. All of my shots to date are indoor studio with reasonable lighting, but you really have to nail exposure, outside in better light I'm hoping exposure will be more forgiving.

I'm lovin my former PetKal brick, have a ton of experimenting to finish before comfortable sets in, lots to learn and my images show it. But oh do I luv it's huge pixels, how colors are rendered, they are sweet

As for that 100 f/2, it was one of my go-to lenses for many moons, luved it's size and sharpness. I sold it and grabbed an 85 f1.8 but kind of regret doing so, I do miss it's metal filter ring. Both lenses can be shot hand-held at 1/100th quite easily, even with these wonky still fingerz

Cheers,
Jerry

With regards to batts, I just picked up a 3rd-party 'Green Extreme' NP-E3 from Adomara; their branding. So far I've just under 700 shots on a single charge and it's still going strong. These don't require a discharge before recharge, I'll keep you posted on it's use, at $40 it seems a good option if an original Canon batt can't be found

You ask about the 1Ds2 and then half the answers are about the 1D2N, so I am not sure if I misunderstand the question... but yes, I have found the 1Ds2 to be more than capable and acceptable at ISO 1600. The noise in LR is very fine and has a very unobtrusive quality to it.

ISO 1600 was usable on the 1Ds2. Much more than that and I was a little uncomfortable. Having said that NR has come a long way in the last few years, so I may think differently about it now.

ISO 1600 is fine with the 1Ds2.

For reference, I never liked the original 5D (for small groups, with facial details) over ISO 1000, so I consider the 1Ds2 to have approx. a 2/3 stop advantage in noise, in part due to its higher resolution, 16.7MP vs. 12.7MP

ISO 1600 on the 1Ds2 is fine, but on my 1D2, not so much.

Either way, 100 f/2 is really a very good lens and you seem to have started using it well already, and you will enjoy it a lot. You may also need to get used to a miniscule DoF the lens gives you wide open at close distances. For example, if you wanted to get Luke as well as the cat both in reasonable focus, you'd probably be at f/16 or so. Now, in poor light like what you had there, 1DsII can't sustain such small aperture.
In fact, if I need to crop a lot, I hesitate to use 1DsMkII above ISO400.

… Cats should never be in focus … I got the lens on a whim … aka Wild Hair …
Had been thinking 85L II for inside … after dark type shots and like the narrow DoF.
Reading the “Best 85” thread, I got thinking about the 100 f/2 vs. 85 f/1.8 … read some FM Reviews on each …
Had a few Dogfish Head 60 IPAs … looked to see what KEH (local) had ..

… and you see the result. Very happy with the lens …

Shot the 1DsII (and the 1DIIn - similar sensors) for several years. I had no qualms shooting the DsII at ISO 800. 1600 depended on the subject and situation but normally I could get by. I did some second camera wedding stuff for an outdoor reception at 3200 once. Interesting but I think that was really beyond what it was designed for.

The dog's in good focus but the cat, not so well, but then when is a cat ever in focus
