p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Big whites need to be tough

I sometimes tend to forget that supertelephoto lenses are also being used in war zones, under the most inclement weather and ambient conditions. The lenses need to be built tough, and they are tough, much more so than many a user really need.

These journalists in flak jackets and steel helmets need every bit of that toughness, and also as much "reach" as they can possibly get.
(This is a screen grab from a very recent video which was shot overseas)

right. or you can actually get a cheap drone, mount a gh4 or something on it and take some great shots. what is the cost of a drone again, compared to a high end tele? and the weight?

just an idea ...

It's a very good idea, just that cheap drones have a limited payload capacity, which means they can carry small lenses only, so they have to get close to action physically, and then they would be shot down promptly if only for sport and BIF practice.

jbooba you are welcome to bring a cheap drone and camera combo to a war zone, and let us know how it works out for you!

Haha, you'd want to bring a lot of them as I'm not sure you'd make the return leg of the journey too often.

deinfine "cheap" and yeah the better - and still cheap - ones would be still capable to carry a pana fz1000, 400mm would be the same as the white canon babies...

ah nevermind.

The other consideration is that those photojournalists do not get to photograph lengthy processes, they are focused mostly on capturing discrete events which happen with no prior notice. For example, a cruise missile hits a building, or there is an airstrike, 3-5 km distant. Their shooting rection time must be measured in seconds, and the peak action itself may last as little as a few seconds.
Therefore, much time is spent waiting for the brown matter to hit the fan, and then when it does, they must work very fast.

Now, what would the drone deployment time be ? Probably good enough only to photograph the aftermath of an event.

I don't understand people that coddle these big whites (and pro gear in general)

You will bring an equivalent of 3 400mm 2.8 IS IIs worth of drones to capture what one telephoto could do in a combat zone

Not only big whites, any lens a photo journalist takes into extreme conditions need to be built tough. I'm sure if a 70-200 failed on the journalist they would not be too happy.

If their glass could hold up to the extremes then Canon's smaller/lighter DO designs might be just the trick not only for those in harms way but for us in less pressing shooting conditions

I'd put a desert camo lenscoat on those lenses, the white sticks out too much. Or just paint them.

That's a tough topic, because camo can easily be mistaken for military and not the press. In the old days press was given some leeway and not targeted as much as today. After the war in Chechnya, where the Russians didn't care if you were press or not, journalists are also targets.

When I was in the Phillipines in the '80's, the vehicle I was in had "Press" and stickers all over it, in hopes of not being shot. I doubt camo or white would have made a difference.

Let's not neglect the small black ones, like the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II:

or even the 85mm f/1.2L II:

Now that is amazing. I would not have expected a 24 TSE II or an 85/1.2 to be used in war zones.

Until your cheap drone gets shot down by opposing forces, gifting them a memory card chock-full of invaluable itel

One does not always plan to end up in these places. You might be in the right place at the right time -- or wrong time, depending on your point of view
