True enough, slower SS's do work and depending on specific action, would make a significant difference in the level of ISO required. That said, with athletes at this level of competition, where a ball strike is involved, I've found that even 1/1000 produces definite blur around the foot and ball area. Not a bad thing but it depends on what it will be used for. The difficulty in continually making on the fly adjustments when shooting soccer (due to the game's speed & variableness) is why I usually settle in on 1/1250. Like your D4, the 1DX's Hi-ISO capability is very good, and cleans up nicely. Since I shoot for the team, these settings have produced more of what they are looking for.
At the end of the day, 'when you shoot for the man...'

the heat I get is ISO, I have 2 clients who open the exif before the image, no kidding
