First of all, this is by no means a scientific test. It's simply a quick grab shooting at every ISO available. Auto everything else, and SOOC except I changed the AWB from full auto to auto: keep warm colorFF. Saved at 1000px on long side. Processed with Oly Viewer 3

I'm quite impressed with what was captured/preserved at 25600. Obviously there is some artifact and noise impact, but a lot of detail held up well. Noise is manageable and I suspect this would work just fine in a pinch. I don;'t ever think I will go to this high ISO, but it was there. I had to.

EDIT: Added Image #3 below. This is set to the exact same parameters, ISO 6400.

Even in this 0.75MP example a lot of detail is smeared away....
But maybe I'm nitpicking

Oh yeah...no question. You are not being being nit picky. I guess with my own experience, and being used to Canon output, holding as much detail as it did, in a m43 format no less impressed me. Maybe I'm too easily impressed. I don't know.

This was really nothing more than a quick exercise of "what happens if?..."

Could you post the ISO 6400 shot?

That might be a very interesting setting.

I am kinda curious where the E-M1 crosses over from somewhat detailed to somewhat smeary. The ISO 25600 setting would be more of an emergency thing for me. ISO 6400 is already very useful, so if it does well there, that would be great.

I keep looking back and forth at these, and IMHO, 6400 is certainly usable. Not so sure I'd print big but I will certainly be using it.

25,600 only in a pinch. If I have time, I'm going to post the full range of samples on my website. Looking back I will I would have taken more time to be a bit more accurate in regard to WB, and slight position shift. Maybe next time.

I dunno, I did a 6400 test and it was excellent except I really had to stop down the lens to be able to shoot with that high of sensitivity. f/16-f/22 range at night on a street.

I'd call that 6400 usable if you're only looking for web or smaller print sizes.

While we go looking for smearing etc, if you had the 25,600 on a web site (smaller size) for a venue then it could still work because most people wouldn't even know there was a problem.

The ISO 6400 shot looks quite good, it loses a bit of sharpness, and a bit of colour, but it is quite usable, depending on the need. Thanks!

Based on these samples, I agree that ISO 6400 is quite good and would be my max limit for Auto ISO ... and ISO 12800 is probably still decent/useable … but I would only use ISO 25,600 if I am desperate. There is too much smearing on in-camera NR or something.

Now, with the Sony A7s …...

I've added an iso 12,800 to the mix above.
