A few months back I picked up an FT1 for my Nikon V1 body and to be honest I haven't really used it much since I get really good results from the 18.5mm prime which is what I almost always use on it (sort of a poor mans Leica M). So I was thinking of putting the FT1 up for sale in the fm forums as part of my ongoing "garage sale".

Last night I tried my Nikon 300mm f4 on the little V1 (by my calculation an equivalent of 810mm f4!) with the FT1 adaptor with a few photos of the moon, and I was pretty much blown away with the results. The only downside is the V1s screen which does not deal well with the insane lighting conditions that the moon creates against a black sky. In any case I'll have to try out this combo on wildlife.

Cropped, but you should be able to see it at 100% by clicking on image. Watcha think? (I'll have to try at a lower ISO and on a tripod, this was hand held so I was shooting at 400):

Looking good. I have almost the exact same picture with my V1 and 300/4 haha. I used a 1.4 TC also though:

Well it is much cheaper to buy V1 + 300mm F4, then a 800mm lens.

Mark,

How does focus do with your Nikon TC14 on the V1 body... does it lock well or hunt forever (as it does with my Kenko 2X?)

Thanks

I only ever tried that particular combination for the moon shot, I haven't tried it at the zoo or anything. It seemed to grab the moon just fine, but that's a very limited test. I imagine the 2X converter would slow things down a lot more...the 1.4 TC is much closer to the naked lens in performance than a 2X. A 2X on a F4 lens is really pushing it for any camera unless the light is quite good.

The V1 has no trouble locking focus with my other lenses and the FT-1, like the 70-200/2.8 II and the 50/1.8 G in a variety of scenarios. I don't own the 300/4 anymore unfortunately.

I did similar tests but went one further and added the TC17e. This was back in November 2013 so can't remember how well it focussed.

Man with Dog at V1+FT1+300mm (full frame with PP) which is quite usable.

These two with V1+FT1+1.7x TC+300mm (slight crop (trimmed 5% maybe?) with PP).

Bird was ISO3200 and dog was ISO2000. They were in shadow. Man with dog at ISO450.
