Often mis-named by many as a Blue Jay and by others as a Stellar or Stellar's Jay.

Was named after the German naturalist, George Steller.

A flock of 20-30 has been visting a group of oak trees nearby. They stuff as many acorns as they can into their mouth pouches, then fly off somewhere to work on decapping the acorns then pecking out the insides. The acorns must be really tasty since it has only taken a couple of days to strip the trees of most of the acorns. Only several Jays around today. The smarter and braver Jays will just collect fallen acorns from the ground. The more nervous ones will seek the safety of picking high up in the tree.

Of course the Jays on the ground are easier prey for falcons or hawks.

Great set. They move so fast, they're hard to catch. I saw three of them working over an oak tree recently. Once, I watched a big Steller's Jay stuff five double peanuts in the shell down his throat and fly away. The most I ever saw a Scrub Jay carry, was two.

Thanks, Steve.

Yeah, we used to put out suet for the songbirds. When Jays were around, they would chase off the smaller birds, stuff their mouth pouches until they bulged, then fly into the forest and stash their suet in tree cracks, then come back for more. We couldn't keep up with replacing the suet.

Wonderful set, Tony. What I can see is that you can master any gear easily to deliver great images.
