That's not such a big surprise when the title of the thread is "Your favorite Nikon portrait lens and why?". They can hardly call a lens they have never used their favourite now can they

Let's see some shots from your AF-D 180 f2.8 !

Right, it's not about the BEST portrait lens - just what our favorites are, which has gotta be based on our use. I don't for a minute rank the 24-120 as THE or even AMONG the best portrait lenses Nikon makes. There are several much better ones, and I even own a couple of those. But it's the lens I reach for most often for the type of portraits I mostly shoot. It's a different question, and given it's real world results, probably a pretty useful one for some folks just getting into it...

Very true Kevin. I often forget that I had the luck that I owned a fair share of lenses, sold quite a few and tried many more that I did not buy.

I recently had the chance to play around with a Sigma 120-300 f2,8 and ended up with the conclusion that I do prefer lighter lenses because I carry a lot of other gear already (when we go out hiking I carry my SLR gear and my girlfriends camera gear as well. She carries the stuff we need for the dogs. Leashes, harnesses, water etc. and of she leads the dogs so it's a fair trade off I carry both dSLR's and somewhere between 6 and 10 lenses)

Here are some photos my girlfriend made with the 180mm f2,8 AF-D

Just wanted to mention that for a cheapo lens the 28-85/3.5-4.5 can handle extreme lighting quite well...

The 200mm f2 is a fantastict lens for portraits because of the creamy bokeh it deliver but the 70-200mm is a great alternative to it.

The 85mm 1.4 is great also for closer shots:

I don't do very many portraits, but I do have several lenses that I like to use if the occasion rises.

I recently acquired a Mamiya 645 lens, 55mm f/2.8, which showed a lovely OOF background along with fairly sharp in-focus details at wider apertures. $73 including shipping of eBay from Hunt's Photo and Video.

I shot M645 55mm on the D800e side-by-side with a Canon 1Ds3 and 24-70/2.8L lens, and although the Canon did very well, there was something the client and I both liked better about the Nikon combo, 4 to 1 in the final choice of poses. I was kind of surprised that the manual focus/manual aperture beat the AF and auto aperture, at least in this anecdotal case.

Here are a couple from the shoot this morning.

Hand held, on-camera fill flash, PP in LR6CC.

My personal alltime-favorite is the AF-D 85/1.4. I don't like the CA's at greater distances, but otherwise it's the perfect portrait-lens for me. Good sharpness and beautiful rendering wide open.

Why did this thread die...

The best of the best is definitely definitely 200mm f/2.0. With that being said, It's foolish to own a 200mm and nothing else.

I even use the 20mm f/1.8G for portraits

Second favorite is the 58mm f/1.4G of course. I would go in this order 200, 58, 85, 35 and 20. I never use my 90 Tammy for portraits. Only for macro stuffs.

Nikon 20mm f/1.8G

200 f2 "Best portrait lens in the world "

Have to agree with this last statement. Absolutely a fantastic portrait lens.

While 85mm is the most versatile for me, the AF 180/2.8 output feels the most magical.

I've used the 200 v1 just once for indoor ice hockey practice. I used a D700 and a d7000 when I needed a bit more reach.
Not only is it a perfect portrait lens, it's a phenomenal sports lens.
Throw in a 2x converter and you have a 400mm f4 lens on full frame.
On the d7200, which has an extra crop function, I can only imagine the crazy versatile you get with this.

So many uses and amazing optics and some of the fastest auto focus ever built.

Highly recommended if you can afford it

Nice to see this thread resurrected.

Taken a few days ago. My favourite portrait lens sans exception, the DC 135/2. My wife in the just ripening Canola fields of Shanghai's market produce belt.

Sorry man. That looks almost unusable. Too much color noise splotches that need to be corrected.

I just bought the 70-200 f/2.8 VR-II because Nikon had a $200 rebate on it, and I am so glad I did. I love this lens for both candid and posed portrait work. Tack sharp wide open, nice bokeh, and the versatility of a zoom.

D810 w 70-200 f/2.8 VR-II @ 200mm ~ 1/200s f/2.8 ISO800 - Aperture Priority, Auto ISO, Spot Metered, Handheld, Slight Crop for Composition.

Good portrait, but stopped down and on a white studio backdrop is really not where the 200 f/2 stands out. Clearly a sharp image though.
