p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Kauai Birdies Three Ways

These images were taken this past June on the beautiful island of Kauai.

1. Kukuiolono Park Rooster - The chickens of Kauai are almost as famous as the beaches. There has long been wild ones, but the locals say the population really took off after the 1992 hurricane. That storm devastated forests but also set many chickens free. Now they freely reproduce. This in an introduced species, but has been on the various Hawaiian islands for hundreds of years.

2. Cattle Egret on Waimea Canyon Drive - Never domesticated, but still an introduction. The first ones went on vacation to Hawaii in 1959, and let their passports expire there.

3. Elepaio - Taken while hiking the Koke trail near Waimea Canyon - One of the few native species I saw, the elapaio is a curious bird. I'd equate it, in a way, to the chickadee. The pic is not the best, and this is a bit of a crop.

Lucky Bonus Shot - Taken on the Na Pali coast from a rocking boat. The geology here is very cool looking! Plenty of rainbows too when rain squalls are rolling through.
[

Let me know what I've done right and what I've done wrong. If you are indifferent, you can tell me that too.

Cheers!

Ken

You have properly focused all of these
Wrong..........not really as that is subjective to opinions

my thoughts..........#1 is full of power in color and texture. I think even a tighter crop would work on this one Ken!
#2 love the white in the greens here, sharp image, perhaps too centered is my thought. A little less on the bottom maybe since the BG blurs out nicely.
#3 Need more exposure here, maybe clone the larger highlight out first though or try a square crop?
#4 that last one is magical! Wow what a sight to see, a real beauty sir!

What are you doing right Well, you must be living right to get nature to fall into line like the last shot!! Wow Ken, that really is a super shot. The opener has got to be one of the best chicken shots I have ever seen! Really You already know 3 isn't your best but I do think it is the first I have seen on this board

Lovely set Ken, I'm envious of your trip!

Thank you BB. Those roosters do have a certain appeal. I couldn't get the best looking ones to pose for me. They had magnificent collars of long, colourful feathers.

Howdy Ron. I posted a bit bigger for you. The forum pixel counter police would be on my case if I went even larger. Thanks for the positive comments.

Thanks for the detailed comments Karl. Nothing there I disagree with. For sure #3 needed more exposure. This was a rescued shot. It was quite dark where it was perched and I exceeded the capacity of the 400 5.6 . Should have bumped the ISO past 1600. Cheers!

The first image is just so perfectly detailed with incredible rich colors and is my favorite. The rainbow is classic Hawaii...we often do an over-under on how many times we will hear the wonderful Hawaiian rendition of the song while over there...almost never less than daily.

Lovely set, Ken. First one really brought a smile. I remember these guys often underfoot at many locations on the isle. Last shot is awesome.
