Hi All - My name is Brian, I'm a long time lurker, and first time poster today. I did this shoot for a family friend a few months ago, and I'm just now starting to get everything posted online (images were delivered to client awhile ago).

I'd really appreciate some C&C on this set because I haven't ever received any professional critique on my work.

That being said, I hope you enjoy the set!

(EDIT: re-uploaded images at 800px instead of 600px)

Welcome, Brian, to the posting side of the people forum. Good to have you active.

First, I'd suggest on your next post that you post larger. Notice how your images are smaller than most of the others. 800 pixels on the long side works well. I go higher myself.

In #1, 3, 4, & 9, I think your composition would be improved by including all of the child's dress.

My fav of the set is #7.

Keep posting.

Thanks for the feedback, Jim. I'll definitely keep that in mind for my next shoot.

I wasn't sure what size to post (such a newb!) - I read 600px was relatively normal for blogs/forums, but I can definitely see that I should have gone a bit bigger. If I have time later this evening I may re-upload them at 800px.

I'm also noticing that the colors are incredibly different when viewing from my work PC to my MBP at home.. I'm hoping they don't look as dull on everyone else's monitors the way they do on my work PC..

my personal opinion is that most if not all are a tad too cool (particularly #3). i would warm them up

Are you editing on a calibrated monitor? That may explain some of the differences. Also, how are you converting to JPEG? I find a big difference in results using export in Lightroom compared to "Save for Web" on Photoshop. Save for web has a preview that I sometimes find helpful.

These are fun. I agree, #7 is probably the strongest, but I like the giggles in #9. These are cute young ladies!

I'm just using my 15" RetinaMBP right now, but I've never calibrated the screen - and honestly, I just don't know how without buying a monitor calibrator/software that I can't afford right now. These were all edited slightly in camera raw, then a bit more in photoshop for more precise work. I just saved as copy in TIFF then JPEG format to a new folder when I finished up. Usually I keep them at the highest quality I can when saving as JPEG.. I haven't explored lightroom the way I should quite yet.

I'm also only shooting with a Nikon D80 right now - so crop frame/lower res images are on par for me . I'm working on saving up for a full frame body, though.

Thanks for the advice though - I'll check out Lightroom's export function a bit more to compare the files.

They are a great family to work with - but man did I work up a sweat chasing them around the yard all afternoon!

Thanks - I think I'm still trying to figure out my processing style. I tend to lean cooler on some sets and warm on others. I may try to post another set from a few months ago later this evening which is much warmer (at least on my monitor..)

Consistency is something I need to work on.

Thanks for looking and your critique - I really do appreciate it.

the third photo appears to be a bit cool i think someone already mentioned that, i didnt read the comments but yeah consistency is key but having fun and your shoots with your "subject" is always more important. alwasy remember to have fun. after all you, the photographer are to draw emotions from your subject to make that capture!

I really like #4,5, and 7 - cute little girls! I think there may possibly be some color space issues going on? Were these posted in sRGB?

That's a good question. This is why I'm glad I posted some images finally. These are concepts I don't really know much about - colorspace, calibration, etc. And it's usually glossed over or not even mentioned in the classes I've taken.

I'll look into which I used, and do some more research on what I should be doing.

Thanks for the feedback, Lisa!
