Probably the smallest beetle I've seen, about 3mm long. First beetle I've seen as we've just entered spring. Is this a 3-spot baby with still the hair on its back? I thought it was just a black dot until it started moving.
Canon 5DII plus Nikon 24mm reversed on 56mm of extension. Diffused flash. F11. 1/200sec. ISO200.

A small, hairy ladybird beetle always suggests the genus Scymnus to me. If I am right, the is a species 2mm long, which used to be Scymnus ementitor or Amidellus ementitor, now Diomus ementitor.

I understand that these readily drop of the substrate and fly away, so well done!

Thanks Harold. You're probably right. I've never seen one this small or with a hairy back before. 2mm sounds about right as well.

Thanks Pixel, Lee and Birdie.
