Keep in mind price wise that 12-40 can be had for $640+tax from the Olympus refurbished site. These are practically like new lenses with a 30-day return guarantee but only a 90-day warranty. They also do not stay in stock for very long at all so you sort of have to haunt the site to pick one up at that price. But quite an excellent deal if you don't have a rebate option to execute.

I doubt you will learn anything you can't learn without the 12-40mm. There's the theory out there that you learn more just using a single prime lens.

I have a 12-50mm and yes it's a pretty mediocre lens, although maybe I just have a bad copy (it's definitely decentered at the wide end, one side is blurry). Everyone says the 12-40mm is great. I don't own it but I'm not going to argue that point, I am sure it's a really good lens.

Why haven't I bought it? Because it's big and heavy and I really like using the 17mm f/1.8 as my main lens. The lighter zooms I have (9-18mm and 14-42mm II R) probably aren't as sharp as the 12-40 but they are small and light.

If I were a wedding photographer, I am sure I'd jump on the 12-40mm. If I didn't care anything about weight and money wasn't an issue, I'd also jump on the 12-40 as a replacement for the 12-50, the 14-42, etc.

Based on optical quality alone, it is indeed an easy decision. However it really depends on how much you value the extra compactness of the 12-35mm. For those with Panasonic bodies, there is also the extra attraction that the 12-35mm has OIS whereas the Olympus obviously doesn't.

Makes sense. Does the OIS matter for Olympus users? With the E-M1 having IBIS can't any lens achieve the same result? I'm very new to this system so this is a sincere question. I think I'm right, but always want to learn.

If using the Panasonic lens, would you turn off one system or the other? I would think you would have to.

Yes Olympus bodies like E-M1 have IBIS so lens based OIS is not needed for those. And yes with a Panasonic OIS lens on an Olymus body, you have to turn off one of the two IS mechanisms, though you get to choose which one you want to use.

As far as primes I have a Panasonic original 20, an Olympus 45 & 75.
I use the 20 an 45 more than the 75 but I get incredible images with the 75 when I use it..thinking maybe I should get the 12-40 and try and sell the 75 to help offset the cost...
Anyone thoughts??
Also I am about to head to Indonesia which lenses do you suggest taking??

If it were me, I'd get the Panny 25mm, Oly 75mm, and the 12-40. Maybe the Panny 17mm.

I don't think that exists

There is the Oly 17/1.8 and the Panny 15/1.7. I've got both, and personal preference is for the 15/1.7 but the 17/1.8 can be had for about half the cost.

12-40mm is crazy good and the best part is it comes with a free hood.
