I am at my wits end with this lens. Ever since I first bought it it has been the bane of my existence. When I first started using it with the D70s, I had nothing but mostly soft images. It drove me bonkers. After some trial and lots of error, I finally was able to coax some decent images from the camera/lens combo. Usually when I shoot soccer games, I use a monopod to support the lens. It seems that the newer the body I upgrade to, the worse the images seem to be. I am moving closer and closer to just selling this lens.
When I used the D200 with this lens, I noticed that the lens was always back focusing and not really tracking all that well. With my D7000, none of the images seem to be in focus. My settings on the camera are:
Rear button AF-ON
Lock ON: Of
11 Point AF
Dynamic 9 point AF
When I use my Nikon 50mm and my Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 push/pull lens, the camera produces sharp images. The D7000 also tends to go bonkers every once in a while when I attach the Tokina 300mm 2.8. It usually gives me an aperture of F7 and SS of 125th and the camera will not allow you to change those settings no matter what mode you try to switch to. The only way to fix the problem is to take the lens off the camera and reattach it. If you do it enough time, the camera will eventually work. Quite frustrating.

Quick test with the 50mm 1.8 yields no focusing issues with the camera...(so I thought)
