Agreed, have had a 100mm non-L; 2 in fact, since the late 90's when I picked up my 1st EOS body, the EOS-3; film SLR. I didn't grab an L until late 2013 I still use both, the older for still-life and copy work, the L simply for the IS; hand-holding, I'm disabled and IS helps with my shaky hands.
There is little difference between them IQ, contrast or sharpness wise and only a small difference in bokeh. Additionally AF seems better on the non-L. It's a great starting point for FF
Here's an image from the non-L and my 40D, your 6D with it's higher/cleaner resolution will shine no doubt...
