Agreed, have had a 100mm non-L; 2 in fact, since the late 90's when I picked up my 1st EOS body, the EOS-3; film SLR. I didn't grab an L until late 2013 I still use both, the older for still-life and copy work, the L simply for the IS; hand-holding, I'm disabled and IS helps with my shaky hands.

There is little difference between them IQ, contrast or sharpness wise and only a small difference in bokeh. Additionally AF seems better on the non-L. It's a great starting point for FF

Here's an image from the non-L and my 40D, your 6D with it's higher/cleaner resolution will shine no doubt...

Cheers,
Jerry

Pick up a used Tamron 90mm on the B&S Forum for around $250. Just as good as the Canon, IMO.

Taken with extension tubes on the Tammy:

1: Canon 100 f2.8L IS or non L - in real macro use (not handheld) the only difference is price.
2: Canon 180mm f3.5L - worth thinking about.
3: Tamron 90mm
4: Sigma 70mm f2.8 Macro - shorter but useful.

Id add both the Sigma 105's to that list as well (the earlier non HSM / OS and the current OS HSM one)
and also the 150/2.8s as well (the later OS version may be over budget)

truth is its very hard to get a BAD macro lens . and the 100mm class options are all very good .

But as an alround lens the NON L Canon USM version is a great lens and is hard to NOT recommend

THanks everyone. would love to find the Tamron used but none out there at the moment.
Probably go with the 100 Canon brand new.

Just to clarify, the current 100mm f/2.8 L Macro is not the lens people are recommending to you. They are recommending the old design, the 100mm f/2.8 Macro (no 'L'). Optically they are both excellent. One just adds IS and a little bit better image quality.

You could probably get this one for $300CDN with no tax and free shipping:
