So here's the low down. I have been an amateur photographer for many years. I have always used Canon since going digital. I've owned 3 digital SLR's, the most recent being the 10D and 40D. My pictures have always been soft and needed post processing in Photoshop to get the sharpness I have expected. I have mostly kit lens with the exception of my 17-40 L that I purchased from a fellow FMer. I'm currently looking to upgrade to a new camera and I'm thinking of the 5D Mark iii or the Nikon D810. I wish Canon would release the

These cams all have AA filters so the pics will all need post processing, at the absolute least, to remove the AA blurring.

I don't think pics posted here will tell you anything about what camera to get. It's not like you will be on the field or in some magical place at the magical hour just getting a new camera or composing in a different way.

Plus, by asking people to post their better pics, you are even more learning nothing about the cams, where the AF fails, where the DR was not enough, those pics won't be among the better pics, so you won't see them.

If you just want to see some pics though, for that it's a great thread and I know I'm liking the thread!

I forget. I'll look it up. It's not a true pano. Just a single shot where I cropped off the top and bottom. It was probably the 24-70 II. But it might have been the 70-300L. There is a slight chance it was the 135L or 100L but I really doubt it. Most likely 24-70 II, but maybe 70-300L. I will find out.

Looking at my library, I have discovered with quite some surprise that I don't use the 5D3 on travel. The only exception was an ill-fated trip a few years ago when I didn't have my 1Ds3 anymore nor the 1DX yet.

I also use Canon lenses (this one is the 24-70 mm f2,8 mark II). In Mexico (Playa del Carmen), a nice Holiday resort).

Well I took the plunge last night and picked up the 5DM3 and the Canon 50mm 1.8 II. I'm gonna force myself to use primes more and auto modes less. Now to start saving and selling to get the 70-200 2.8. Took the camera and the lens to the Pueblo Chili Festival today. I shot RAW and Medium. The pictures from you guys definitely give me something to aspire to. Suggestion on sources for learning post processing? Again, thanks for all your advise and critiques.

Scott

I am self taught in all of this. Just spend a lot of time messing with every dial in lightroom to learn how they all manipulate a RAW image. That, and I recommend always using full sized RAW captures. Hard drive space is cheap and it is easy to delete images that you think stink right off the bat before editing anything to conserve even more space.

Excellent Scott!! Sounds like you have the right attitude. The 50mm 1.8 II is not a bad little lens. i used to have the plastic fantastic too. Takes good shots.

I use mostly primes, and find it great fun. Some good value primes you might consider: 28mm 1.8, 35mm 2.0 IS, 85mm 1.8, 100mm 2.8/2.0, 135L, 200 2.8L. Also Sigma 35mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, and any of their Macro lenses.

Have fun, and keep taking photos! Thats the main thing. i started using the DPP software as its easy to use, and you can get pretty good results if you use it well... might be a starting point.

When you use fast lenses, make sure you select your AF point manually, and dont let the camera decide!
