Looks vintage filmish ... kinda reminds me of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

BG is kinda busy and is a bit of mass. Might consider a trim off the top (much or little to taste) or maybe some other way of reducing its draw (blur, tonal value, etc.). FG grass might be just a touch crunchy, i.e. diff structure than elephant skin which looks pretty good.

After seeing them together, I'd probably "split the diff" on the amount of crop off the top between the two.

Some really nice lighting for revealing the texture in the skin and contrast to pull out the details in the tusks.

Way to take all of the suggestions, Kent!

Nice shot, Scott.

With Kent's new crop my eyes snap right to the head and eyes, then follow the trunk and tusks into the space where the elephant is looking.

Nice shot. I like the mood you have produced here with your processing.

My first idea would be to try and provide more tonal contrast between the ele and the trees. (Unless you intended to blend him in.) ,by lightening him somewhat or darkening his background/foreground.

Would you be interested in posting the original color, so we can work with the contrast?

color version (with some basic processing, no crop). If I were keeping it as color, at the least I would crop a tad from the far right. But I like Kent's crop.
Feel free to play in color, BW, what have you!

I really like the color, I agree some cropping would help.

The color rocks it ...

The (color) layers of the sky/bush BG vs. the subject are distinguished, even where the mono doesn't have as much. Cropping from the right, I'd look at just inside the highlight on the tree to take care of that little distraction.

Perhaps with a little crop and some creation and a few tweaks?

Very nice, the color version is preferred over the B/W. Nice re-work Karen and Kent.

Oh yeah, color is the way to go here.

Take Kent's crop and add a bit to the top and you've got something.

I agree that the color is preferred. I also took the liberty of doing a fast edit for both color and B&W and below are my suggested reworkings.

The color version. I think this cropping and processing works well for this shot.

The B&W version. I don't feel the B&W has as much impact as the color.

thanks Kent. Yeah, exactly where I was thinking of cropping.
I have so many images like this. Got it in my head that they need something special so the stylized, hunter's leatherbound scrapbook look came to mind.

BTW, The Mutual of Omaha look is what I was going for. Marlin Perkins!
