7D Mark II Image Quality: Let the comparisons begin!
Let the comparisons begin:

7D Mark II vs. 7D Image Quality

Imaging Resource provides images shot at all ISO settings. The difference at ISO 3200 is Profound with a capital P!

Looks very promising... I'm waiting for the comparison with the 1d MkIV. Looks like the 7D MkII is going to be an awesome product!

Looks like whatever they did for the 6D, they did for the 7D Mk II. It looks like it's manifesting the 1.3-stops of theoretical performance difference between the sensor formats.

I just had a quick look at a 6400 JPEG vs the Fuji XT1 and I have to say the Fuji looked a touch better..

.. but that was JPEG and I think Fuji really have a fantastic JPEG engine.

I compared the Imaging Resource JPEG samples of the 5D3, 7D2, 1D4, 7D at ISO 6400 and I would rank them in that order. The 5D3 was far ahead, then the 7D2 followed very closely by the 1D4, and then a big step down to the 7D.

Your mileage may vary... with Adobe raw conversions I expect the crop bodies to be closer with the 7D2 still ahead slightly at ISO 6400

If it's decent at ISO100 (ie. not worse than the 5d3 - which I strongly suspect isn't the case) and decent at ISO6400 (ie. usable for weddings and about the same as the Fuji XT1 which I already use up to 6400) they'll probably get a sale from me..

.. and I'll likely ditch the Fuji as it's just not good enough in terms of AF yet for me to shoot a whole wedding with.

it looks kind of similar with the test above, although the 7D2 having a natural grain and the 7D a blotchier, uglier grain

a little sharper but more grain for 7D2 and a little waxier but less grain for the 7D, but also a blotchier, uglier gran for the 7D

PhilD:
Fuji 6400s aren't really 6400 as I recall.

Clarity/sharpness seems improved. I always thought the 7D images looked a little soft (Even the RAWs). Not anymore.
Perhaps there were changes to the thickness or quality of the sensor cover glass?
The best test would be comparing RAW files.

At high ISO, 7D2 has noticeably less noise and more details than the 70D. It could be from enhancements to the sensor. Or it could also be from enhancements from the JPEG engine. Probably a little bit of both.

Well, the 7D MKII shots look sharper to me. So adding sharping to the 7D shots to match will add noise. the MKII 6400 shot is a tick noiser to me than the 7D 3200 shot so maybe 2/3 stop or full stop improvement?

Compared to the IV, the shots are softer but a little less noisy so it's probably close.

5DM3 shots are way better in terms of sharpness and noise.

Thanks. Yes... without NR, they look similar... 7D2 is grainier and 7D looks like some kind of NR has been applied...

Weaker AA filter would be nice. Maybe the dual pixel tech needs a weaker (thinner AA filter) to work best?

How do you mean exactly? I did equalise the exposures to be as fair to both as possible..?

Might be a combo of a different AA filter and less split greens on the CFA (if you recall, the 7D images all showed nasty 'mazing' artifacts all over smooth areas due to it using two different greens on the CFA filter, instead of pairs of the same greens, one of the pair was a considerably different green, that tricked the de-bayer algorithms, they managed to overcome that, but at the cost of just a trace of loss of micro-contrast, it was actually amazing that they were able to fight off the mazing while losing only a tiny bit of micro-constrast, the obvious solution would have sacrified considerable resolution).

Look at the fabrics and you will see the 7D II holds more detail yet has less noise. Looks great for ISO6400.

Here is a 1D IV sample at ISO6400
