p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fuji X Halos ???

Looking for a sanity check here... not meaning to start a sensor contest thread... thanks

I'm trying to evaluate the Fuji system (X-E1 and 23mm for now) for lightweight backpacking setup

Some people have pointed out and I have noticed some halos in the RAF images straight from the camera. I don't see this in all conditions, but I've noticed it enough to ask...

I thought it was my processing methods, but I've seen it in the SOOC RAF files.
Notice the upper left and upper right of the mountain in the image below. This is a single file processing, with default LR sharpening.

I double-checked a few 6D images of mountains and I don't see this.
Have you seen this on your Fuji X images? Have you seen this on images from Canon cameras, and I'm just missing it?
These are processed in Lightroom. Would it go away with other RAW converters?

#1 - My cropped/edited/sharpened version. Faint halos visible around the mountains

#2 - SOOC 100% crop. LR sharpening at 0.

Did you do any processing or is your sample really using default settings only?

I've noticed that using a combination of shadow lifting and highlight recovery can create pretty bad haloes and perhaps other mask based operations can too. Using the adjustment brush tool with "auto mask" enabled creates the worst haloes.

Aham - the 2nd one was with the "Zeroed" preset, so Default settings only. Then I moved the sharpening slider to 0, rather than the default 25.

I downloaded Capture One, so I'm going try that out later today.

John,

Did you Zero out ALL the other default settings too? Sharpening is a form of contrast variance between pixels. As such, other settings @ contrast, clarity, etc. that alter pixel relationship can do this also. I have ALL my settings in ACR "Zeroed" before going into PS ... not just the sharpening. (Leaving WB @ "As shot")

Can't speak to it @ Fuji, but I've seen it happen elsewhere. I do seem to recall something in my Fuji research @ the way the profile is setup that would suggest a touch of "overcooking" in play @ G/B channels, but I don't recall if that is pertinent to only jpg.

Photo ninja is the processor I use and think it is great. I did not use raws before I got his as had some problems with other processors. Had some similar issues with lightroom

Which camera profile did you use (under the Calibration section)? That could make a difference.

Aham - no camera profile selected.
Kent - everything was zeroed.

Tried out PhotoNinja and Capture One, and did not see the halo at all. So, glad it's just the RAW converter. thanks for your help everyone

LR strikes again. Fuji should just put in big letters: WARNING NOT TO BE USED WITH ADOBE PRODUCTS

Perhaps if Fujifilm worked with Adobe to get past this they would break the 2% market share barrier.

You mean it was set to Adobe Standard? Doesn't LR have several profiles that emulate Fuji's own profiles?
Edit: I was just wondering if the other profiles create the same haloes.

By now, I'm assuming that Fujifilm is OK with how Adobe works with X-Trans....

LR 5.6
Yeah, Adobe Standard was the camera profile. I was looking at the Lens Profile before (Only the X100 series is available?). I still see it in the other camera profiles too.

Very strange then. That kind of haloing would be unacceptable to me.

In the past, when I have observed artifacts in LR, I have not found that using ARC makes any difference.
