Richard Israel is an amazingly talented photographer, and a good friend of mine. He consented to having me take a few photos of him.

"I can't stand looking at my own work."

Jailed behind the concept of having his own photo taken?

Perhaps!

Here's one more I like.

The second is a very solid portrait.

The first runs deeper and feels acutely observant (both ways) ....and is artistically so, so nice, Evan.

The play of light and shadow is everywhere, but well short of "busy". I really love this one.

It's a dance for the eye and a potential ponder for the soul. And the barbed wire is ridiculously fortuitous. Or did you string it?...

As ever, thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Chuck

I read your post title and thought a self portrait would follow. (Except I didn't think you'd brag)

I'm attracted more to the first shot. He's connecting with the camera more in that one, but I think my attraction is more about the fence and him looking over his glasses.

Thank you all!

The wire was there. Slightly dicey part of Charlotte, albeit a cool one.

Snapshots... I thought you were good with words Evan?

Top one is tops for me.

Do I recall a rectangle crop of this image?

Take this with a pinch of salt given how much I love my draconian vignettes on my own work but I reckon it would really enhance the image if you added one.

It would reinforce the caged-in look at already has and really draw focus to his look.

Cheers!
BK

He looks like a real person. The first one has real meaning and doesn't look like you just stuck him behind the fence to add a meaningless element to the shot. The look and pose are natural and comfortable, yet there's a small amount of angst, frustration, and defeat in this image.
The second one is great. I love the tonal range of the image. I love his clothes and his look.

Huh. I thought I'd commented on this already...

I just love the first one. It feels so real, you get a sense of who he is in this shot. There's nothing artificial or posed. I like the second shot as well. It's always interesting to me what you're going to do in your portraits as I know you put thought into every aspect of the shot. The first thing I notice is your angle, shooting up at him, giving us the sense of your subject being powerful. His gaze past the camera, hands in the pockets in such a natural way. Great job!

These are both good looking shots. I'm attracted to the first one more because i feel it's a little more personal! Nice work!
