Havn't posted for a while due to loosing a bit of interest but once macro is in your blood it's hard to stay away. Sold my MP-E65mm so currently using a Nikon 24mm reversed on extension tubes on a Canon 5DII. Diffused flash on a bracket just about sitting on the end of the lens. Lens stopped down to F11.

All shots taken using John K's left-hand brace technique which is ideal for high mag shots and when the subject is close to the end of the lens.
Hoping to post a few more now that summer is approaching down our neck-o-the woods.
cheers,
peter

You clearly don't need the MPE to get excellent results.

Very nice set, Peter. How much magnification can you get with a reversed 24mm plus ETs?

I too have not been using my MPE65 for a long time. Maybe I should sell it off. Been using a 60mm F2 lately for night macro. All the subjects here are BIG.

Thanks Kurt.
Shots 1,2 and 4 were taken using 36mm of extension. I took a reading on my ruler and about 9mm filled the frame so I'm assuming this equates to about 4x mag. Shot 3 was with 12mm of extension which gave about 2 1/2 x mag.
Trying to get focus with the lens stopped down to F11 isn't easy at this mag but holding them in my left hand enabled me to get them into the sun and to see what I was doing.
I've still got my 100mm macro for those bigger subjects.
cheers.

Peter,

Don't you have live view boost? As a user of manual f11 on extensions, I would be lost without it.

Thanks Harold.
I don't usually use live view but after trying it even with the lens stopped down to F16 and F22 it certainly is easier to view. Will try a few field shots with it.
cheers,
peter

This is on major advantage of digital over film for macro.

Beware of misleading exposure indications if it also works on image review. My Olympus m4/3 have caught me out a few times, the image looking good on the camera screen but, say, a couple of stops underexposed in real life.

Pardon my inexperience, but isn't live view too slow for field work?
From memory, the mirror has to drop back into place before the actual shot is fired?

I'm afraid I have to agree. Tried using live view in the field but found it to hard to focus accurately in sunlight plus too slow because of the mirror delay. I think with my current set-up focusing through the viewfinder is giving me better results. As long as I've got enough light on my subject F11 is OK.
cheers,
peter

Interesting. I have mirrorless m4/3.

Beautiful shots. How did you persuade the subjects to allow you so close?

Thanks. I used John K's left-hand braced technique which involved holding the stem of the flower the insect was sitting on while resting the camera and lens on the same hand. The bee was happy enough to just keep on feeding while I took the shots. The spiky spider was just waiting for prey and the jumping spider on the leaf kept playing hide and seek with me until I finally got it in the frame. Usually early morning or late in the day the insects aren't so active and let you get in close.
cheers,
peter
