p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 1dx shutter problems

Hello dear friends.
Even though I'm still in love with my 1DX,
Still a "bit" of disappointment from the last repair.

205k on the body which is 2 years old.
Just came back from Canon Mississauga.

Still think the toughest bodies on the planet can have a longer live.
And it's never been on the rain or desert or any other crazy weather environment strictly Weddings and never used 14 fps.

Especially frustrating to see Canon's advertising where they are repeating every single time - "performance without compromise, for up to 400,000 cycles. "
And of course it's not covered by Canon Canada warranty as body is 2 y.o.

Not good Canon, not good.

The "gotcha" is the "up to 400,000 cycles. Contact Canon and tell them you only got half the rated life. If you are really nice about it, they may well cut you a deal.

400K is not a guarantee, but only an estimate.

So what happen if someone happen to have shutter bounce issue and it is only 13 months old, under 10000 shots Well, this can happen to any of our backup bodies. Imo - by law, if anyone has used an advertise number to attract a buyer then seller/MFG should honor their warranty advertise number to that buyer.

Why not just claim "up to" 1,000,000 shots? It's the same thing, right?

Already contacted my CPS consultant and answer was "it;s out of warranty"
and "400,000 cycles" works if it's with in one year of warranty, so you have to pay".

The repair cost about $280 CAD, but it's not about money.
It's about how you as a Business owner doing everything for your client, and huge corporations are doing Nothing for their clients. Even after you spent so much $ on your equipment.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen, Gentlemen, Canon needs the money to replace all those black focus points with the old red points.

So my 4 year old car has 20,000 miles on it on 3-year/36,000 warranty.

Will / should the dealer fix it for free if it breaks

in your case - the 3y/36K looks much more realistic than 1y/400.000 for the EOS body

So is the shutter assembly of the 1DX less reliable than say, a 1DM2N, that can go for over 500,000 clicks before the shutter blades crash on a weak battery?

Do they not built them like they used to?

The shutter ratings are for marketing only. How many people buy up a series to get a longer shutter rating? It doesn't really mean anything unless Canon stands behind the statement.

You read it here first, Canon 1DsX will mark the return of red focus dots

It could be worse... they could have told you it was ImpactDamage™ and refused to service it because it was GreyMarket™, but they might get in trouble for infringing on Nikon's trade marks...

But seriously... for those who have shot the entire lineage of 1D series bodies, are you finding the shutter durability in the 1DX to be less than, greater than, or about the same as previous 1D series bodies?

that's interesting. Marketing scheme at it's best... 'up to 400,000' meaning it could only be 1,000. wow.

It could be as low as zero if you happen to drop the camera and break it before taking a shot... wow.

It's a mechanical part. They guarantee it for a year. What's not to figure out? Just for grins my 1D2's shutter went out at 58k+ in a burst of enthusiasm. The 1Ds2 is creaking along at over 100k and it's what, eight years old.

Bummer about the shutter. I remember a few failures that were fixed free of charge 6 or 8 years ago on 1dIIn's and 1dsII's but I think they were 10-30k click cameras. IMO $280 sounds fair for the work involved and you might get 600k out of the next one.
