p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Some food for thoughts: 7D II = 7D + 70D

I don't mean spec-wise (though you can probably make that argument too), but at $1800, it is almost the precise total of the other 2 bodies combined ( there is a current deal of $800 after rebate for the 70D, and it is possible to get a 7D for about $1000, though you probably have to rely on EBay or reverse auction sites to get such a deal).

So the question is, assuming the 7D II has more or less the same sensor as the 70D, would one be better off getting the other two bodies to get the "best of both worlds", e.g. you can then have one with a flip/tilt screen?

Thoughts?

it's almost like buying 5d3 and 1d4 instead of 1dx.
I went both ways... I can see pros and cons of both world.

if you need speed, the buffer on the 70D sucks.

It seems buffer depth, 10 fps, and advanced 65 point cross AF all favor the new 7D2. I don't think the previous two bodies you mention stack up, except for analogy purposes.

Personally, when a refurb 7D just went for $719.00, or I can buy used for $650.00 with extras, no way can I justify $1800.00 for the 7DII.

It's just doesn't seem to be $1100 - $1200 better, I'd rather put that money towards glass. Keeper rate may increase for action shots with the 7DII, but the 7D is no slouch for action either.

I have been very happy with my 7D, and I feel like this upgrade addresses all my perceived shortcomings, mainly high ISO and dual slots. Is it worth the cost to upgrade? I'm not sure yet, and the original will continue to plummet in price...

I doubt the original will fall much further (if at all) right now. There's only so much room for it to fall. It still provides a pro level autofocus in a prosumer body. The 7d2 is starting out at double the price for new and 3x the price for used. The 5d is still commanding 4 or 500 bucks and that's 2 generations behind the already oldish 5D3.

the potential of f8 af alone is worth $1k or more to someone with a 400/5.6 or similar "slow" telelens
I think I can put off buying a 600/4 for now while I try a 400/5.6+ 1.4TC+ 7d2

+1. I pre-ordered mine. I'll be picking up another 100-400 to go with it.

We shouldn't forget that the original 7D sold for something like $1800 when it was released, IIRC. Not bad getting all these features today for the same price.

Personally, I'm in no rush to update my APS-C, so I'll wait until prices fall after a while.

It's the entire AF system that just makes me from ear-to-ear, f8 is just killer. My Longest glass is 300f4L IS and with both vIII T/C's that opens up a lot of AF assisted reach at an IQ level that's fine for my needs. The lighter my rig the better and IS is a bonus, letting me bypass a 400mm for now.

As per usual I'll be a late adopter until my 7D and 1DMk2N give out, they are still quite usable for my hobbyist wants/tastes. I'm really glad Canon brought out this beast for those with immediate need, seems they really hit the mark; no pun intended

My hopes are that a bit of this new AF trickles down to a 6D2 if it turns up, that would serve my mid-range budget quite well

I had a 7D and 70D. They are not that similar. I sold the 70 and 7 to get a 5D3. The only thing I really miss is the reach.

65pt AF, Af at f8, -3eV af central point, dual card slots, 10fps, New image sensor (as long as it's as good as the 70D), and 5D3 controls definitely make this camera worth it to me.

I'm getting one.

For what I use my 7D for, I cannot justify putting down another $1000 to get the 7D2. Now if Canon came out with a 5D4 with 40mpix and huge DR...now we are talking...

If the latter ever happens with the still virtual 5D MkIV, check out where others are also...50 MP is the name of the game with higher DR

Or even a 7D with a new generation sensor.

Canon, well done on the overall specifications. But again, I think we'll find just another rehashed sensor in a much awaited release that disappoints.

I know, I know, cynical. But where is the new sensor tech, Canon?

I don't mind being proven wrong. In fact I'd be glad to be.

Had both and was not happy with the AF on the 7D, and not happy with the button layout, etc. on the 70D. Would much rather have just one 7D2.
