Drawing a blank on how to approach this one ... open for suggestions.

NOTE: Posted a little large for pp latitude.

IMO, the original composition is a bit cramped, particularly on the right side. Those rocks could use a bit of 'breathing room.' There's a little too much bright sky too; it overbalances the rest of the scene.

With the muted colors, a higher contrast B/W might work fairly well.

Thanks,

I was thinking about going with the B&W, but for some reason am struggling with how I want to approach these tonal values. I've got variations on the comp and some brackets. If I get this one figured out, then I can work the others too.

I'd like to retain as much fogginess (haven't shot much fog) as I can, but am not sure how to pp toward that.

Lewis River Falls Yellowstone NP if not mistaken.

I try for the best capture of the scene possible at the best time of day and season. Then I process to fix the cameras natural short commings like sharpness and DR and color saturation (compared to the RAW).

You have a good capture of this scene, it is very hard to do in sunlight and is not a golden hour location.

So I simply did my usual on it. In ACR I used auto to get an idea what was possible, then I used a gradient mask to pull the top half back a bit. Auto brightened the image.

Then I went into Lab and used Shadow Highlight to add some contrast. The mid tone section is good for this by upping contrast for example 20 and darkening about half -10 for example.

I then used an action I have in LAB for some saturation bump and sharpened.

Very subtle, but that was all I think this needed.

And here is how I might crop it.

It looks like there is a lot of color in this shot. Maybe just try to bring the color out a bit more?

Lots of good stuff to consider from colors to sharpening to crop to mono, etc.

Ben ... you nailed it again @ Lewis Falls YNP. This was early AM en route to Coulter Bay. Just a roadside (bridge) snap, but it was very enchanting in person.

Still not sure on a direction, but here is a draft with far too much experimenting (i.e. created plenty of artifacts). I'm torn between color / mono ...

This last one (foggy with color and contrast) is a good direction to me.

I might try it with a gradient mask to darken top to bottom.

I tried but if you darken more it looses a bit of the foggy feel as the contrast get increased. But then it is just a matter of personal taste. I also kind of like how the the dreamy effect came out.

Fog in an image lowers the color of an image considerably. I prefer the natural, inherently desaturated feel and I prefer to keep my processing close to the realism of being there. Of course you're pp'ing decisions will be based on the vision you want to convey. B/W does work nicely with fog but color can as well and in this case I prefer the color.

Explaining my crop:

Notice the unfortunate long pine log that stretched almost all the way across the stream. Visually it divides the image into two separate parts, an upper half where the image is about the falls in the mist and fog and a lower half, about the stream and rocks. It isolates the falls from the rocks below. Nice rocks, but they divide the interest. By cropping above the rocks the eye is allowed to dwell on the visual nexus of the falls, with the remaining foreground not competing for separate attention. If you must have foreground rocks, I'd suggest removing the dividing log.

One school of thought is to embrace the fog, but here's my take on this Rusty.

I agree with Karen about cropping, I was working on a version and saw her remarks before posting. An alternate idea using crop and rock removal. I also re-located a log or two.

EDIT: Added a 2nd image with a touch more contrast

I too tried my hand at a rework some time ago. It's been sitting on my desktop and I keep bumping into it. I like it and have enjoyed viewing the various styles others have offered here as well. So here's my "style"...
