Cross processing?

The staircases draw my attention - very strong impact.

Regards,

Bob

I took a course this summer in the HDR technique, and as part of that the instructor introduced me to the Nik collec tion software which I'd only used for a few black and white conversions (Silver Efex Pro). I opened the RAW file in Photoshop CC and then played with possible color conversions in Color Efex Pro until I found what I liked.

Nice job on the image. I really like the diagonals but feel the wood on the beach is a distraction to the image. I like the tree and I boosted the saturation, warmed the image a little ( color balance still a little work ) and now I feel my eyes goes to the sun bather up the staircases to the tree and back.

Lines of stairs are kinda cool, but the mass and sat of the foliage competes pretty hard for me on this one ... that is given the title. Imo, the only thing that should be "overcooked" in this one is the person on the beach.

Dialed back some sat on the foliage. Played with some diff crops to reduced the mass of the foliage, but didn't find one I really liked without cutting through the stairs.

Sort of negates the special effects filter he was trying out, no?

Doesn't necessarily "negate" the effects, but it might illustrate the diff @ whether the effect was helping to push/pull the viewer where he wanted to take them. If the trees were where he wanted us to go, then I'd say it was a help. If the point of the image/message is the small person on the beach, then I'd say it only drew us away more powerfully.

Effects can be cool, but they can be a double edged sword, also. Either way is fine, but for me the effect was incongruous to drawing us away from the titled subject. Maybe the effect + a different title ...

I do agree that the greens dominate the image and could be dialed back a touch.

Agreed, but like the candy store - easy to have too much of a good thing Use with care and consume sparingly.

That or keep a few bottles of Pepto close at hand while consuming volumes of Pixie Sticks and Taffy.

Well, I once did tell my instructor upon learning of Ansel Adams darkroom work ... "He Cheats !!!" ... so I guess you're in pretty good company.

Sand might benefit from different processing and removing the log might help.

Here's another take, in B&W. Like the texture of the sand in this.
